Daihatsu hijet mpv wheels stick out.

Forum:

Should my wheels putrude out about an 1" past my wheel arches? All 4 are like this, please help. 1996. N.

Wheels sticking out

I wouldn't have thought so.

I have always been under the impression that if the wheels stick out past the body/arch, it would fail an MOT.

hmmm

if it is only a 1inc then i very doubt it will fail a mot, main reason nowadays there a\re so many cars etc doing it, most garages wont dont say much....
if you want to play it on the safe side, euro parts sell universal arches which do a great job and fit perfect once trimed down......

STICKY OUT WHEELS

The simple answer is no and yes it will probably fail the MOT.

Check to see if the previous owner added wheel spacers between the wheel and hubs, if so remove and replace the wheels. If the wheels are aftermarket are alloys or the like and not standard then the offset is incorrect and is allowing too much wheel to protude. If this is the case you really have two options the first obtain the correct wheels and the other extend the arches although being that the frontdoor is part of the arch this may prove impossible plus of course the side door will foul the arches if too large when opened..

wheel spacers.

I think it will handle a bit better with the spacers but do you think it will make the steering any heavier. as it is quite heavy, do you run more tire pressure in the front. It has 12 months mot on it so it went through ok.

SPACERS

It may handle a bit better with the spacers and obviously if it has a 12 month ticket on it then the MOT rules have been met.

Spacers put additional strain on the wheel bearings and with the forward control on the Hijet will add strain to the steering joints and, I would assume, make the steering heavier. The steering on most Hijets creak a bit and when I had one it did worry me to the extent that I purchased a new rack so I would not advise over doing it.

As for pressures the rears should be higher as they take the weight of the load. You would need to check the hand bood for the correct pressures or some one on the forum will let you know them I'm sure. The spacers should make no difference to the pressures.

Even with the wider wheel base I would take care not to push handling too far in a Hijet, it's not a Mini and if the MPV isloaded can easily tip I'm afraid putting risk on your self and passengers.

I know it will never handle

I know it will never handle as well as my fiat punto gt turbo that i sold to purchase this van, but we love the mpv its good for our 3 kids and i can put the seats down in the back when i use it for window cleaning. Also got the bull bars in the front and window bars in the back window, 48.000 miles full service history. N reg.

Hijet Handling

Hi

If you like it thats all that counts. My Van was great, fast and although a bit naughty in strong winds was great fun. Just be careful with the Kids on board. A bit of a different animal to a PUNTO TURBO GT, but none the less better all round for multipurpose.

Hijet Tyre Pressures.

The Tyre Pressures from the Daihatsu Hijet (CB41 engine) Owner's Manual we have obtained are...

Front... 2.0 kgf/cm2 29 p.s.i. 200 kPa

Rear Unloaded... 2.4 kgf/cm2 35 p.s.i. 240 kPa

Rear Loaded... 3.75 kgf/cm2 54 p.s.i. 375 kPa

(There SHOULD be a sticker on the rear (B pillar) of the Driver's door frame with the tyre pressures on it... Wink )

Hope this helps...
