The lock nut is on the drivers side of the box and is used to adjust pedal free play. The Sprtrak has a DIAPHRAM clutch that adjusts as it wears so you may find very little improvement.
As for the water problem, just a few suggestions of many, it may be the Rad cap itself not holding pressure. You can see if the rubber hadd gone or is obviously seen better days. A solution to get home is polythene to make the seal but not a long term solution.
Once warm, do the top and bottom hases feel hard of soft. If soft then the system isn't pressurising. The temp guage usually sits just to the left of normal rising to normal when worked or a little above. Oil contaminated by water is not the only sign of a head gasket failure. Overheating due to the water being heated by super hot exhaust gases can also occur dependant on where the gasket has failed.
If it is an Older Sportrak check the Radiator fins for deteriation as these seem to rot and then cooling fins dissappear along with cooling. It may be a worthwhile execise in back flushing the RAD. Do you have any idea why the thermostat was removed? Could be that the previous owner had the same problem and removing the therostat allows the water to continually circulate, generally an indication of previous overheating.
Good Luck

Does the Sporti not have a
Does the Sporti not have a heavy circlip round the clutch cable (with many 'slots' to put the circlip into), where it comes out of the bulkhead into the engine compartment? That's where the 4trak adjusts. Can't remember back to my Sporti owning days.
Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
