removing rear axle shaft

Forum:

Hi people, This is my firts post and visit to the web site, I drive a FourTrak F75, I had it as a normal road going car for ages then decided to start to make it more off road so to speak, anyway 4x4 didn't work after having the gear box fixed. I was told by the garage that it was my automatic locking hubs, so I fitted new manual ones, still no 4x4!! so took it back and then they said it's maybe my rear dif, this I don't think and have also lost confidence with them, however the car is now pulling violently to the left when I change gear or accelerate, I now beleive that it could be the rear axle shaft, I have managed to get all the brakes etc off but can not see how the hub comes off to be able to remove the shaft.

Any advice what so ever apart from throw it away and buy a land rover would be greatly recieved!

Regards

Richard

I would be suprised if it's

I would be suprised if it's a brocken half shaft. I have worked and played HARD with these cars for over a decade, and never brocken one. The rear hub does not come off the end of the shaft, it all comes out together. I seem to remember something about a cerclip on the diff end of the shaft? Not a 100% on that, as I said I've never had to take one apart. Basicly though, if it drives in 2wd, then the rear drive chain is OK. The diff could have too much play in it, but that shouldn't couse the problem you have described.
As for 4x4 problem:
1. jack up one front wheel.
2. lock both hubs, and put transfur in 4x4.
3. try to spin lifted wheel, it should turn a little befor stopping, then be able to go a little way the other direction (about 2 inches of 'wobble').
4. if it just spines, look underneth while spining wheel. If the prop is turning the transfur is not providing 4WD.
5. if the prop will only turn a little each way (when you try turning it by hand) then one of the FWH's is not engaging.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
