I have had a '98 Fourtrak TDX from new and done just 21,000 carefully driven miles.
Should the cam belt be replaced for piece of mind or will it go the 60,000 distance.

CAM BELT
21K is not a lot on a CAMBELT but the car is now nine years old and I would personally change it for piece of mind and certainly if not now within the year. The cost of a new engine is so much in comparison and if it goes you will kick yourself. Now that is a personnal opinion and a lot would leave it till the 60K and risk it and probably some would get away with it. It is personal choice and peace of mind more than anything.
If you are able to do the job yourself then the cost of a cambelt is not that high and it is worth replacing all the belts at the same time. If you cannot do the job and have to pay the labour charge then that may be the risk you are willing to gamble with and you may well get away with it. I have just had a CAMBELT done on an AUDI A6 and that was 800€ in France where Labour is only 55€ an hour and they replace the water pump and all the pullies. The UK labour costs are much higher.
As I say personal choice and a gamble.

PS 60,000 or 6 years is the recommended time so I would get the thing changed as age will be its down fall!!!!!!

Cam belt - changed at last
Had the belt changed yesterday at 24000 miles and almost 11 years old. Condition was like new.I guess i am pleased because it meant I wasn't driving on a knife edge with the old one !

Well you did very welland luck was on your side this.
I accept that they can look new when removed with original markings etc intact but that is not to say that they are not about to fail internally and the result can be hugely expensive if not a wrecked engine. As I previously posted 60K or 6 years is the safest and the norm and that remains my personal recommendation.

I do agree with oldminiman re 60yrs or 6yrs for peace of mind and recommend this to anyone else.

get it done ASAP cam belts age so even though its not done the mileage 9 years is too long for a belt. I've had mine changed twice now and I think its been about £120 including parts each time so not bad for peace of mind
