1991 sportrak oil pump

Forum:

Hi guys ,i have had my sportrak about 1and a half years now ,and it has been on the road about 3 months off that time . A little bit of back ground inf .

I bought my sporty as a non runner ,the camshaft had snapped ,so i sourced another head which was ok ,and fitted it ,the engine ran sound for a while the started to get a knocking noise when the engine reached temperature ,anyway the cambelt snapped ,so i stripped the head down again and saw alot of wear on the cam and the bearings ,especially on the furthest away bearing from the oil pump. So i am inclined to think not enough oil is getting pumped around the engine and in turn wearing the cam etc .

Could anybody tell me if the oil pump is a common flaw with sporty engines ,and where to source a pump and gascket at a reasonable price ,I approached the main dealer and they wanted 120 plus vat just for the pump ,even then they dont carry any stock ,so it has to be ordered in .

I do have a part engine with a pump but i would still need a gascket ,but to be honest i am tired of keep strippin the engine down and would like to drive the vehicle for a while,it would be nice ahhhh. i would appreciate any help with my problem .

cheers guys

yours hoping vince

Well Oiled

It sounds like an oil starvation problem, when the engine is rebuilt, check the following;
Is the sump strainer blocked with debris, this will restrict flow to the pump.
Is the engine oilway to the head blocked with debris from the head change, blow this out and clean thoroughly.
Is there an internal oil leak, such as the oil pressure valve stuck open and allowing oil to return straight to the sump, instead of going to the cylinder head.
Before condeming the oil pump, fit an oil pressure gauge to the oil pressure switch hole, check the pressure, this will identify whether there is a blockage, or if the pump is knackered.
