Forum:

Hi Guys,
Been out and bought a 1990 2.8 turbo diesel fourtrak today and it has a problem which i used as bargaining power to reduce the price.

The problem is 2nd gear!It works sometimes and then it wont. When it goes i cant even seem to find where the gearstick should belong in second (just sort of stays in the neutral area)
Ive had a glimpse through the forum and it sounds the gearbox seems to be a common problem.
Anyone got any advice on how to fix it?
Whats this about a nut that strips a thread and loses the gears?
Any other usual things i should know about as ive never owned/driven one before so should i be looking for any other niggles/problems.Ive given it the once over underneath etc and cant see any major problems but any advice would be appreciated.

2nd being a git is normaly just a sign of your car having Daihatsu character. The main shaft nut striping off is usually herolded by 3rd and reverse giving you gip, (acting like there not engaged properly). The 2nd gear problem is usualy just that the gear wont go in when the gearbox is cold, (especialy when changing down). Doubling the clutch usualy sorts this.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
