Has anybody had this prob??after a ten mile drive home from work
at a average speed 50/60,i can smell gear oil,it is gear oil it has that distintive wiff that only gear oil has.BUT i have no visable leaks,and it only seems to smell after high speed drive not short trips,,fourtrak

Pull the knobs off both gearb
Pull the knobs off both gearbox and transfer case shifters. Unscrew and remove the rubber boot around both shifters. Now check carefully both rubber boots that fit round each shifter and its appropriate mount on the boxes. You may have one split. Not a real problem, except, if you go offroading, it may let crap into the boxes.

smell
NOPE hubs dry as a bone
maybe its gearbox,must get under the thing again and have another look,could it be due for a change of oil??it has done 195000 mile
been layed up for a year?now it is doing a 100mile a week,perhaps the oil is tired

Sound like the gear oil that remains is probably running dry. Gearbox, tranfer and diffs need maintenance!
