exhaust ??

Forum:

hi all,
just a quick one just got my first sporty and i have had a rattle underneath i had a look and the tail pipe has come off, this will be done over the weekend but would this have affected my mpg??? and will it improve a little cheers all

What year is it?

This might help ...... if fitting a complete new exhaust the catalyst can be removed and disgarded if the car is pre August 'J' reg. MOT will not be effected since cats pre Aug 'J' reg are not required. A full no-cat exhaust is as cheap as a tail pipe!

My J reg has been without a cat for past 2 years. MOT no problems and no emission increase etc. MPG is about +10% without the cat.

Rear Axle.

Tip ... you must jack the rear of the car so the wheels hang free. Put trolley jack under the centre of the rear axle, but have [safety] axle stands under the rear end in case the car drops. You will need sufficient clearence between rear axle and body to get the new pipe over the axle. Use a hack saw to cut through the rear section old exhaust pipe to seperate the rusted rear box from the pipe/cat. Then remove the remaining old pipe from the cat.
MPG will not improve but the noise will be much quieter. MPG about 28mpg. Try a fuel [petrol]additive to clean the injectors.

I had a K reg Rover once.

I had a K reg Rover once. It had an empty 'box' where the cat should have been. Looked good from the outside. Went through he emition test like it too...

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Exhausted

It may affect it slightly, but any differnece would be negligable, the engine in your model is tuned for slightly less power and more low range torque.

Correct driving is the key to improved fuel consumption, as is maintaining the vehicle correctly, these vehicles are not known for good fuel consumption, nor are they bad, particularly when compared to similar vehicles from other manufacturers.
