oil leak

Forum:

iv got a leak on my diff its from where the prop meets the diff eney ideas Unknw o yes its the back diff. sorry im crap at this sort of thing.

diif leak

Hiya elmo. Let me know how it turns out. I have a long standing leaky relationship with mine, same place. First I replaced the seal, and it still leaked again after 2 months, so I put another seal in there. No luck. Took it all out again, and put in a speedy sleeve with new seals. Lasted about 8 months and is leaking again. The odd thing is it doesn't leak in water, just leaks out oil.

You might want to check your breather hose isn't blocked first.

oil leak

hi there doog is the oil seal hard to change.and where do ifind the breather pipe.this is a stupid question but iv never worked on a sportrak before.thanks for your advice.

start with breather hose

elmo, the breather hose should come out the top of the diff (rubber hose about 10mm round), and probably goes into the chasis cross member. I'd get a wee air hose and blow air through it from the diff end first to make sure it's not blocked with dirt and mud. If it's clear, next time you change your diff oil and have the plug out, blow some air through the breather hole too, just to make sure the whole line is clear.

That's the simple bit. The seals are a bit more work, but not that hard. I can't remember the order of things exactly (one of the others will know)but it just involves dropping the rear prop shaft out, and taking off the round plate bit that goes into the front of the diff. It should come out as one unit and have the seal in it I think? So long since I did mine. Anyway, not too hard to do in the garage.

Anyone else out there make my waffle a bit clearer for elmo here?

A repeated oil leak like that

A repeated oil leak like that makes me think of too much vibration on the diff, which in turn makes me think of either: 1 knackerd barings in the diff 'nose' (it wouldn't nessasarily be enough moovment that you could feel it by pulling on the macheinary), or 2 an out of balance prop shaft. Just a thought?

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

diff leak

yeah, I checked the prop shaft and it had a small amount of movt from the universals. I took it to a 'prop shaft maker' and he said there wasn't enough movt to cause the shuddering around in the diff housing. What's the deal on the bearings/barings Nev? How do I check those?
