Environmental Issues

Forum:

It would appear we 4x4 owners are under attack again from a voiciferous minority, not only are we environmentaly as far as driving our chosen vehicles, but for repairing them.

In a report not yet released, but leaked to a few of us, it identifies 4x4 owners as most likely to work on their vehicles, this involves servicing and all it entails. Oil, anti-freeze, brake fluid, and filters are described in the report, as being poured down the drains or being thrown into the dustbin as general waste, is causing an environmental problem. AS 4x4's require more servicing, they conclude we cause more problems by contaminating the water course from our bad practices, and as such, local councils will be urged to check for oil spills around the homes of 4x4 owners with older vehicles, who may undertake their own servicing and maintenance.
Yet again we are under attack, we need to ensure we dispose of all contaminants correctly, businesses have to have an approved waste contractor to remove and correctly dispose of these items.

As individuals, we can collect our own fluids and store them in a container and dispose of them at our local tip, they have the correct disposal facilities for these fluids.

Lets not give the morons opposed to our vehicles the big stick to beat us with, and show we are responsible in the disposal of all our vehicles fluids. We are all well aware of the lies, misinformation, and cunning cherry picking of facts made to fit their point of view, and how it used against us.
LETS NOT GIVE THEM THE AMMUNITION.

Environment v 4x4s

I agree that the government is going all out to blight the 4x4 users as if we don't get enough stick from the brain dead motorists who really believe this proprganda tripe.

i agrre and have always disposed of contaminates for many years carefully and in the proper places, although previously it was advocated that we should paint our Fences with old oil..ugh!!.

It is, however, not just the owners of 4x4's that practice home mechanics. Many cars particualrly those older cars and those classics that benifit from free road tax also are serviced at home and worst still it is often these cars that pollute the most, yet are admired so much. Public Transport fleets have been proved time and time again to be poorly maintained and highly polluting. I have followed buses belching out black smoke on many occaisions and with very few passengers.

As both a 4x4 driver and a car restorer I think it is quite incorrect for the UK Government to single out one group as worse that others and create descrimination in furthering their policies. Seeing yet again that the US, India and China have all failed to support the treaty on environmental changes, we are facing a losing battle. Never the less we must still make the effort to persuade them of the error of their ways by being responsible and not, as in this instance, by passing more of the blame, unfairly and unsupported, onto a minority. Perhaps instead of MP's swanning around in Daimlers and Jaguars they shoud set a precedence and use cycles for the short distance from Whitehall to the Houses of Parliament. The problem is that a tree dies from the top and unfortuantely we are led by dead wood in the UK. They disregard public opinion preferring to use the "Do as I say and not as I do" policy.

OLDMINIMAN

Where do they get this garbage from, certainly not their brains but from some silly Quango or Szar which they seem to appoint to control everything and all of them are just expensive useless idiots who couldn't control a piss-up in a brewery. The Government in the UK is full of people feathering their own nests and making money from us. They talk out of what most of us sit on and what comes out is no bloody different and we all pay for it. Next week it will be something else and we will all pay for their mis management of the Country. I may live in France but because of English law I have to pay all my taxes to the UK, crazy or what?

When you read their reports, and look at the real facts, it becomes obvious; they cherry pick several facts and distort them, they them rearrange them to form a totally distorted picture. More worrying is the fact that the media becomes embroiled in the fervour in an inane attempt to conjour up some spectacular story to entice listeners or up viewing figures for their programmes.
What people fail to see is the possibilities open to the current Government to try to tax people, currently business is taxed upon waste; looking at the larger picture, it appears the Government spin doctors are possibly looking to work their lies upon the public to introduce such a tax upon vehicle owners who service their own vehicles. as we all know taxes are never abolished, they are renamed, altered, and all to the detriment of Joe Public, they only ever rise, and never go down.

I hate these ecomentalists

What id like to know is how they came up with us as the most likely to do this? Do they have stats, or is it greenpeace cocks just being their usual annoying self. Its ridiculous, next thing theyll be saying is that 'yes, you can have a 4x4......but er. you cant use it!'
Us 4x4 are the smokers of the automotive world....apparenty.

Jobs for the boys!

I am a no-smoker but just imagine all those researches looking into dustbins of persons believed to 'roll their own' cigarettes!

Following on from the useless ‘hips’ scheme, this could be another provider of none productive jobs. Government will soon be onto this job creator. Rubber gloves ready!

97% of statistics are made up

ok so we are bad guys cos we like to work on our trucks,

regular maintenance improves fuel economy, 1 point to us!
we do not need to drive our vehicle to the garage, saving fuel, 1 point to us
few mechanics are required to travel to work in order to service our vehicles, 1 point to us

i dont think we should be tied up with the general 4x4 lot

fourtraks and even sportraks are genuine 4x4 vehicles, they are not for posing, they dont come with 6ltr v8 engines, they are rarely seen dropping kids at school in the posher areas of london.

i personally drive i fourtrak due to its ability as a towing vehicle, its a work truck owned by my business, it goes off road, its also more fuel efficient than my transit while handling 1.4 tons of sand!

we are not 4x4 drivers, we are daihatsu 4x4 drivers, there is a difference

Even more interesting

Even more interesting statistics:

4X4's are used by many people ranging from the well known farmers and agricultural workers, including forestry. Imagine the scenario if these idiots had no British supplied food, it was all imported and most imported food is flown in; they would also have no paper to continue their letter writing campaigns to other interested parties, and Government departments, more than one to us.

Basic utility providers such as water companies, gas suppliers, and electricity suppliers all need 4X4's as their service lines and pipes all run above or below ground. Many of these run through rural areas, under fields, and in the most remote and inhospitable areas of the UK, imagine if they had no gas, electricity, clean water supplies, or sewage facilities; undoubtedly they would be the first to complain, many more points to us.

Emergency services such as the Police, Ambulance, and Fire services are all well known to us all, these organisations have a legal responsibility to protect us all, and as such, have a number of 4X4 vehicles to undertake their duties in ALL AREAS of the country, and in all weather conditions.
Less well known emergency organisations are Mines Rescue, Coastguards, Cave rescue, and Mountain Recsue, these all need 4X4's to undertake their equally important functions. Many of these environmentalists live in rural, or remote places where the only chance of getting an emergency vehicle to them is to use a 4X4. Imagine the furore if they did not get an immediate response if they were severely injured, they were the subjects of a vicious crime, or their wooden houses burned down.

Just some further food for thought, no pun intended.
