Hi all, re; `96 Sportrak...

I had to replace the snapped radio aerial at the weekend. An interesting job that involved removing half the dash and removing (breaking) the stereo.

I finally got a new aerial and radio (borrowed from a neighbour) fitted but in my haste to work out which way the wiring worked on the stereo I think I may have blown a fuse or something as neither the clock or rear door locking switch (mounted between the seats) works Sad

I put this down to my own stupidity so feel free to take the piss as deserved...

Has anyone had this happen and found the fault? I'm assuming I've either fried the clock and lock or blown a fuse that serves either/both components???

Just one other point, I now also have a really annoying kind of rattle/whistle/vibration which soundslike it's coming from the rhs heater duct or something? This is strange and gets louder as I drive faster - any similar experiences out there...?

As usual, any advice greatly received...

BTW the Sportrak is excellent - I don't need another car - ever!

Fuses

Sounds like you've blown a fuse because the clock, interior light and switch for back door so indeed share the same fuse. I have told someone previously how to identify which fuse it is as its not labelled as clock. I think its labelled as door lock or something like that.

I blew the exact same fuse whilst putting in a new radio!!

The fuse to replace is the horn cigarette lighter (well it was on my Sporty). Its 15 amp, located underneath steering wheel.

At a guess the whistling is coming from your arial lead not being airtight where it comes through the bulkhead. I asum you changed this, if not you've sertainly disterbed it. I'd say where the lead goes into the bulkhead, bury it in silicon sealent, or meatal putty, or your own sealent of choice.

My Sporty's aerial is broken off too, just below roof height. I keep meaning to replace it but having read the above i might just put up with it as it is!!

Did you replace it with an original Sportrak one, or an after-market Halfords type aerial?? Sportrak ones are stupidly expensive for what they are i think, although would be much simpler to change because the wiring needn't be touched.

Hi Nath,

I did try to buy just the metal tube (so to speak), but couldn't. I went to the local car audio shop and looked up the suggested replacement part - it was about £12 which I guess is ok.

It fits all right but is not offset like the factory part. Also, the mounting bracket at the base is a one screw fitting which, when in stalled exposes the remaining whole in the door pillar. Not ideal.

Still, it works fine and I've just ordered a selection of aerial balls!!! I'll post a picture when ones fitted Wink

When I had the same problem with first a Sporti and then a 4trak, I used a CB arial rod. For any of you out there who don't know anything about CB's. If you have what is known as a 'base loader' CB arial, it has a tight coil at the bottom in a sort of cylinder. Then a thin meatal rod (about a meter or so long) is conected to the top of this. The rod just slides into the cylinder, and is held in place by an alen key grub screw.
This rod can be slid into the remains of your brocken Daihatsu arial. A little solder (or packing with silver foil, if you don't solder) to hold everything together, and to produce a good conection. Vouala. It even looks pritty OK.
