2.8 turbo or non turbo

Forum:

Just how gutless is the 2.8 non turbo? I have been told that it is worse than the 2.5 I have at the moment. I have the oportunity to buy one cheap, is it worth waiting for a turbo or is the 2.8 worth having for its simplicity?

Given the choice between the

Given the choice between the 2.5 and the 2.8 normaly asperated, I'd deffinatly go with the 2.5. It is much more touquey at the bottom end, and is nearly as quick at the top.
To make the 2.8, Daihatsu streched the 2.5 block to make it slightly taller. This increased the cc's by 300, but somhow totaly upset the dynamic of the engine. The Terbo version is still not as good as the 2.5 at low end torque. But the terbo comes in quite early and makes it a lot better performance wise. The terbo lag is quite horendouse until you get used to it.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Happy with performance of non turbo Fourtrak

We own a 2.8 non turbo Fourtrak and I'm happy with it's performance - I don't have any problems keeping up with modern traffic. We also use it for towing an old (heavy) horse box.

One advantage, there is no turbo lag, and it pulls consistently from idle up.

I'd would be happy to buy another 2.8 non turbo Fourtrak.
