Forum:

Ay up guys, its my first post on here so hello everybody,Ive just sold my 90 to get a pajero for our lass (which she loves)and now I want another offroader for me,I dont want another "Land..break down every 5 mins..rover"so ive narrowed it down to two motors, one being the jeep cherokee 4 litre and the other being the fourtrak,I know the max size tyre/wheel I can put on a cherry is 31" like I had on my 90,but im just a bit worried about the 4trak,it looks a bit low,so say I put a 2" lift on it what is the max size tyres i could go to?can I put 33,s on? and what are they like on/off road.they look pretty strong from what ive seen, theres a guy near me that does spring lifts and stuff so i dont suppose lifting it would be a problem but I dont want to be blarting around Tong and start smashing diffs and bending steering arms cos i havent got big enough tyres...any info would be good...cheers guys

hi

Hello mate, for off roading the leafy fourtracks are very good, plenty of pulling grunt to, you can get 31" tyres on them with a 2" lift no probs, but use alloys if poss with there offset, there are people on here with much bigger tyre sizes - check out images and ask them. You wont break a fourtrak, just wearing parts to replace like any other vehicle. The diff clearance is the traks biggest problem off road in ruts cos there huge, so you do need a good tyre dimension, also you cant buy off the shelf off road products for them, but a mate of mine has started a company fabricating things for em and hes very good - www.bloodredoffroad.com. I think the traks BIGGEST problem is rust so try to find a good one, check body work underneath very carefully!! oh also harsh ride on the road, the independants are better from this point of view. WinkSmile

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Tyred Out

You can fit 33's with a 3" lift, you will however, need to ensure leaf sprung models leaf springs are in good condition and not sagged.
Toyota transfer case gears are available to correct the speedo, and prevent overgearing off road, also, fit full underbody protection from substantial plate. With full underbody protection the vehicle will slide like a sledge over most terrain, or when being winched out.
Using 33's will also require a good offset, use alloy rims with good spacers, also regularly check and adjust the wheel bearings, as well as greasing them with a waterproof (marine) lithium grease.
Axle protection can be fabricated and incorporating diff protection is prudent to protect from rock damage, also fabricate protection for the steering arms while fabricating underbody protection.
Fourtrak's have good crossmembers allowing the fitting of smooth underbody protection, but some of the original brackets for the standard protection are flimsy, and will need uprating.
Took my old beast to Tong once, it was an F20 fitted with a 300BHP diesel, seriously modded transmission, and serious underbody protection, the LR boys laughed at it until i drove it past them with ease when they all got stuck.

Cheers assassin,landys are

Cheers assassin, landys are not all they are cracked up to be y,know, ive had 2 now and in 25yrs of having cars ive never had such an unreliable motor,my mates just bought a 90 (1996)and hes seriously regretting it,his words were "***k me all I seem to do is repair the thing,I wish id never bought it".....everything on em seems to be bodged from the factory, big gaps everywhere,no heater, rain running down your neck,..I wouldnt have another one given...........so ill have to make my choice on what i buy now..cheers anyway

Fourtrak V Land Rover

Heres an interesting one; during my time in the mining industry, we always tried to buy British wherever possible, it was policy.
Land Rover were the preferred vehicle as all vehicles were worked hard, and I mean hard, they fulfilled many roles, and a large degree of maintenance, damage, and breakdowns were factored in.
Policy changes meant we had to have two suppliers of vehicles, I suggested the Fourtrak at a meeting, they were basic, competent, and could take the abuse to which they were subjected too.
Costs after one year of running broke down as follows:

Fourtrak's cost one third of the price in maintenance and servicing costs of the Land Rover.

Breakdowns of the Fourtrak were 8% of those of Land Rovers.

Damage was the same for both vehicles, they were all battered in the environments in which they worked.

Vehicles were modified from new with full underbody protection, they were only supplied with rubber flooring, no carpeting; so they could be hosed or jet washed out. I have seen them with so much mud in the footwells that you could not get the throttle or brake pedals fully down.

Drivers preferred the Fourtrak's as they were better towing full capacity loads, quieter, better on road handling, and easier to perform daily checks on.
Fourtraks achieved fuel consumption figures 32% better than Land Rover's, when worked in identical conditions.

Interesting eh?

Fourtrak / Landrover

My Fourtrak came from a customer of the company I worked for, adjacent to Land Rovers, Gaydon site,(test tracks, ect) , he put the truck around their Land Rover Experience track with no problems, mutch to the indignation of the LR people, probably the only time it was really offroaded, another customer who I asked advice from before purchasing my Fourtrak, ran a offroad experience/tuition site, near to the Gaydon site ,when asked about the offroad capability,of the Fourtrak he was driving , his comment was 'what do think we use to recover and tow out the Land Rovers that our clients bog in' the work weary Fourtrak that he was driving that day. So I bought it, after borrowing it for two weeks.

But I would still love a MK1, it would have to a 80" model, just like the first motor I owned,ex Ministry of Supply, and I did so abuse it, and it in the box did have Fulltime 4WD ( Unknw ),with a over run dog/gears in the box (2 gear sticks and a little chain to pull to lock the dog clutch) so basic, mend it with a bent nail and a piece of string jobbie. and it could run on a mix of TVO and petrol, when petrol was short. I must be feeling my age, am I that old !!!!!.

Why

Just why did Diahatsu stop producing the Fourtrak, when they could have had a superior truck on the market.

very interesting assassin,I

very interesting assassin,I had tossed it up between a 4trak and a cherry, but it seems that the 4trak is the one to have,i think the cherry is far too "un-user friendly" for me as i am on a tight budget and i like to fix most things myself when i can,i HATE paying dealership labour bills and i would rather buy the tools and do it myself,so the 4trak seems to fit in cos its pretty basic with not many toys and gadgets to go wrong unlike a cherry,so i think ill be lookin for a 4trak on leaf springs, unless i could get a suspension lift 4 an independent that allows me to get 31" tyres on without losing most of the articulation on the front end cos of the torsion bars...... Smile

LR 90 V 4TRAK

HI THERE,
THIS IS MY FIRST TIME ON HERE,I TOO HAVE HAD LANDYS IN THE PAST, ALL FROM AN 88 UPTO A RANGEY, AND ALL THOUGH I KNOW THEY CAN BE TROUBLESOME, I NEVER HAD ONE BIT OF TROUBLE WITH ANY Smile
I USED TO WORK FOR OUR LOCAL COUNCIL AND THEY USED 90'S WE USED TO TOW BOWSERS, GANG MOWERS ETC ALL DAY LONG WITH NO TROUBLE Wink
THE ONLY PROBLEM WITH THE 4TRAK IS THE CORROSION THAT SEEMS TO BE ON MOST OF THEM.
MY BROTHER A FAN OF THE 4TRAK, LOOKED FOR 2 YEARS AND THEN SETTLED ON A SHOGUN, A SHAME AS OUR LOCAL DAIHATSU DEALER ONLY LEANS TOWARDS CARS, AND JUDGING BY THIS SITE THERE IS STILL A DEMAND!
HOPE ALL GOES WELL Smile

Yeah,Its amazing how you get

Yeah,Its amazing how you get bad reports from one person and good reports from another,I suppose its horses for courses and depends how lucky you are to get a good motor,I must have had bad ones, mind you I did give em a good thraping about. But I think ill have a change from the green oval this time and try maybe a 4trak Smile
