A laugh

This road fund license thing is a complete joke now, i wish they would change the name of it cos none of it goes towards the upkeep of the roads, they are getting disgusting round where i am, should claim for wearing parts really, anyway there should be no reason why the scooby should be so expensive cos its nowhere near the weight of an equipped 4x4, which obviously does more road damage, but check this out, a 3 ton flatbed lorry costs less to license then my trak at the minute - wheres the common sense in that????

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Pugs appear to be cheaper to run than Fords

That's interesting Lurch, as my mum's and sisters Ford KA Luxury appears to be more expensive to tax @ £150 and then £155 in 2010. And that's only a 1.3 8v duratec engine jobby.

its all wrong

They really need to change it and call it something else beacause its now becoming a green tax rather than 'fix the road' tax, taxes keep going up but pay doesnt, many more icreases and most of us will be up a certain creek without a certain instrument, i think we should start singing the beetles song - Revolution !!!! Bottom line .... this Government is broke !

For most of the so-called 'economic cycle' this government has been borrowing about £35 billion a year.

The total debt to be serviced is now about £350 bn. At 5% interest, this is £17.5 bn per year, or half of what it is borrowing. This scenario is familiar to anyone who has overextended themselves on a credit card, but with 'billion' written in the place of 'hundred' for Joe Average.

IMHO, this money has been frittered away on lots of 'nice to have' socialist ideas which don't work, because most people aren't philanthropic and grab any money that is going if they have got a sob story to sell.

Now we have an economic downturn, all the pie in the sky figures don't look so good, so the government is scratching around for money in a blind panic, much as if Joe Average has some very large and mean baliffs banging on the door.

Oh, let's stitch the motorists again. The green excuse might be getting a bit thin, but, hell, it can be pursuaded to work again.

Noticed that the new Sirion

Noticed that the new Sirion 1.5 SX which has the same engine as the Terios, is going to only be £125 tax... Not as bad as a Mitsubishi Shogun tho... had a look for a laugh and thats going to be £800!

Misconceptions

Weight is not the issue, it is ground pressure, basically a true 4X4 runs large tyres with lowish tyre pressures, this gives them a large footprint, the weight is spread over that large footprint. Basically we are talking force over area, as an example a Citroen AX weighs 600KG's + depending upon model, but its small tyres mean it has a far higher ground pressure then a fully laden Fourtrak. This is why true off roaders go so well off road, a classic example is the Chieftain tank, in full battle trim it weighs 72 tonnes, but due to its large tracks, only applies 12LBS/sq inch of ground pressure to a road surface.

ROAD TAX AND THIS GOVERNMENT

FIRSTLY LET ME SAY THAT I LIVE IN fRANCE WHERE THERE ISN'T ROAD TAX ON ANY VEHICLE.

I do however by UK law pay UK tax which is about 5 times on my pensions as I would pay in France.

The Government have gone over the top on the green issues relating to the motorist who is an easy target as like it or not outside the cities there is very little alternative to the car.

The hatred of 4x4 is also based on a theory that they pollute more, rubbish!!. The cars that pollute more are the old classics that although very nice as I used to own one, are tax free if built before 1972 I recall. In addition why pick on the 4x4's which in some areas are necessary and vital.

As a UK tax payers it sickens me this continued strike on the motorist. The recent thing in Oxford is a fine for sitting with the engine running, how silly. Do they not realise that turning the thing off and then on again is more polluting unless you are sitting keeping warm for some time. I recall that the drivers for MP's in Downing Street were always getting the cars warm in this way before their Ministers ended their endless meetings, some for over an hour.

It is about time that the UK motorist told this government that enough is enough. We are now having strikes and protests in Paris over the cost of fuel in France, do we hear of any such action in the UK, yes but not very often. I have signed the petition and will sign all such that condemn the activities of this Government.

GOOD LUCK

OLDMINIMAN

M J Young

In Addition To

In addition to oldminimans accurate comments, i would like to add that the most accurate survey of carbon emissions, it is not the actual running of the vehicle which causes the most pollution. Manufacturing and disposal of the vehicla account for around 80% of a vehicles emissions, while the other 20% is from actually driving it.

How can this be? we are currently drip fed a lot of misinformation by the current Government in an attempt to lead us to this way of thinking. True 4X4's have an average lifespan of 2.7 times that of an average family saloon based on the entire world market, in short for every fourtrak or sporty produced 2.7 family saloons are produced. True 4X4's have simple flattish mild steel panels, these use far less energy to produce than the complex compound curved carbon steel panels used on modern vehicles. Having simple shaped mild steel panels also makes recycling easier, carbon steels cost twice as much to recycle in energy terms, as well as financial terms.
Most modern vehicles rely upon electronics, these are huge contributors to the carbon output, and most are even more expensive to recycle, some cannot be recycled. Look at the complex electronics used on modern vehicles, ECU controlled engines, ABS systems, transmissions, traction control, etc the list of electronic components is endless.

I am not the Devil

I am getting really annoyed with this government moving the goal post, i have owned mostly 4x4's (I am not a farmer and I am not the devil) in the twenty years that i have been driving, I prefer the them in the same way i prefer 'Iron Maiden' to 'Take That' its freedom of choice from what i drive to what CD's i put in it, that being so the last car i bought was a RAV4, i bought the RAV because it was '211 Co2' and was in a Tax band which all though expensive i was prepared pay at £200 for the year. But now i see the bands have been re-jigged and my next year of road tax is going to cost me £310, that is an unacceptable increase on a car i have already bought and a car i made a calculated decision on when i bought it a year ago, i know i could sell it but who wants to buy these now hight tax band cars that will be flooding the market, the british public are being taken for a ride in cars they can't afford to ride in!

The plan, there must be a way to get the entire british driving public to apply for a tax refund on the same week, everyone could just ask for their money back at the same time, the authorities couldn't cope dealing with everyone not having road tax, they can hardly deal with the ones that do it now.

We could all make a stand, and make a difference to Rip off Britain.

I only do about 6k miles a year, and If we can't change things, I might as well just drive more, what the hell I am paying enough for it.
