Forum:
Just brought a 1994 Fourtrak TDX. All fine on test drive but on way home a problem! It goes through the gears fine - up and down - but if you come to a halt in fifth it sticks and you have to get both hands on lever to pull it out. No problem if you are moving. I am aware that the clutch is on the way out but with some life left - months not days!
Any thoughts?

Hi.
I have had the same problem . I put down to sloppy driving, change down gears before you stop.
Most embarrasing when you have rolled up to the lights and your struggling with the gear stick.
Scource is probably due to transnision windup/loading in the gearbox.

Clutching At Straws
This is a clutch problem, or a problem with the selector mechanism, most usually the clutch which can bring this problem on suddenly.
Due to the way the gears lock together, to prevent them jumping out of gear when climbing steep hills, this will happen on all gears eventually. It is the slight wear on the 5th gear train which makes this happen on the 5th gear, this is because this is the gear in which it spends most of its time when on road.
Lubrication is another factor, ensure the gearbox oil is up to the correct level, not degraded, or contaminated from serious off roading.
