4 trak rear brake back plates

Picked up a '95 trak a while back and it looks like its been used for launching boats. The Anglo-Saxon had a pretty good workout while I freed off the bolts retaining what was left of the towbar.

I found the rear brake backplates were pretty rusty (the tinwork on the periphery was right through in places). Before I get around to replacing them, can someone advise me if I have to start sliding out half shafts to get them off, and if someone knows where I can get a pair in serviceable condition without paying Daihatsu prices.

Sorry can't help on the amount that has to come out o get the plates off but a good source for spares is ebay where a number are being broken . It is worth asking prices of the sellers as their are some trade breakers on there who tend to price items higher than some one breaking one on his driveway.

Back Plates

No, the half shafts do not have to come out, although before replacing them I usually give them several coats of industrial paint. Hang them for about a week in a warm place to allow the paint to fully harden before fitting. After fitting paint the outside to cover any scratches and the bolts, this will give them considerably more life for a little effort.

While changing them it would also be prudent to replace the rear axle bearings grease, most owners neglect this, use a waterproof marine lithium based grease.

Unless something has been mixed up in the terminology here, or a drastic change was made with the later model Daihatsus, then YES, the rear inner axles (halfshafts?) have to be removed from the rear axle for backing plate replacement. (We are talking about solid rear axles here) Not only this, but the rear inner axle has to be stripped (bearing, retainer, seal all have to be removed) So it goes without saying that as part of the job, the complete rear axle bearing assembly is also replaced in the process.

Sorry for the terminology confusion. Half-shafts (UK) are the mechanical connections between the differential gears and the wheel hubs in a solid rear axle. .... Independent rear suspension .... wow, that's wishful thinking !

It has been a while since I looked in the rear brakes, so I vaguely remember that the centre hub (which carries the wheel nut studs) was bigger than the hole in the brake back plate. That would mean a big strip down to replace the back plate. Oh well, it looks as I have a job on.

Terminology

No confusion over terminology, earlier Fourtraks had problems with the backplates corroding, to counter this they finished from the factory with a better coating. Replacement of these items did initially require stripping the back axle, as they are all solid axles, as the drive hub is larger than the hole in the back plate, a different one was imported to the UK. This was a split type which did not require the axle to be stripped and was supplied by most dealers, the only problem was the old backplate, once unbolted needed cutting off.

Look for a split type, these were galvanised, etch primed, then painted, you will see the difference when you look at them.
