cam belt failure

Forum:

hi guys

The cam belt snapped on my p reg 900cc petrol hijet a couple of days ago. bad maintenance. doh! it was making a ticking noise which I put down to the tappets but could have been the cam belt complaining??
anyway, wondering what to do next. I'm aware some engines suffer more damage than others when it comes to the cam belt snapping and was wondering what the general score is with the hijet?
is it likely to have caused damage to the valves? is it likely to be fatal?

please let me know if you have any advice,
I think i'd like to try and keep it on the road if possible.
thanks

CAM BELT SNAP

Sorry the Hijet is like any engine when the cam belt goes, everything goes out of sync.

The only way to tell the amount of damage is to strip the top of the engine down. The damage may depend on how quickly the engine stopped but at it's best I would expect a few bent valve stems from valves and pistons colliding or worse. If it is worse then it may be worth checking for a replacement engine on ebay or the like but change the Belt befroe you put it in unless written evidence is their to show that it has been done.

Cam belts should be changed every 60K miles or every 6 years maximum whichever is soonest and if you are not sure, then the advise is to change it. A bit late for that advice now.

I'm afraid it's "bite the bullet" time and get the engine stripped.
