Drain the oil in the diff and check the contents for loose teeth, mud etc to start with, then do what the other posts (when they arrive) say Wink

God, could be anything. A bit more info would be useful. It could be, a rear wheel bearing, or something loose in the rear brakes, or a loose U bolt on the rear axle. But seeing as you get it only on rough roads, check the suspension bushes. They could be worn, giving you metal to metal contact. Get a long bar, crow/prise bar will do, and slide it in from the rear between the chassis and the spring, through the middle of the spring shackle. Now push dow. You may find movement there. You can also try at the front of the spring.

definately in the diff- by ro

definately in the diff- by rough roads i mean any bumps in a road! sounds like a stone in an exhaust pipe! Rattles more on low revs, eg in 5th gear at 35mph. By pulling the handbrake on hard and revving/biting on the clutch in first i get the noise too . if its dry tomorrow ill get under and have a fiddle-if not its to the garage and into the overdraft again!

Then try the pinion bearing.

Then try the pinion bearing. Climb under, grab the rear of the prop shaft, and try to shake up and down. There should be no movement either up and down, or in and out where the driveline enters the diff.
