Correct tyre size

Forum:

I have a 97 ELXI Sportrak.

Can someone please tell me the correct tyre size?

It currently has 225/70/15 fitted but they do look a little wide for the wheels.

I'm really not interested in wide macho looking tyres more so in functionality, handling, fuel economy, noise etc.

I was thinking 205/70/15 (possibly 205/75/15) would me more suitable especially for a journey I'm planning.

I know the wider tyre flexing all over the show on a corrigated road will over heat faster than the narrower tyre and is also more likely to pop off the wheel at deflated tyre pressures, but just not sure what the original correct designed size should be.

Downsizing, the consequencies

this should show you the rim size for the tyre you have if you enter the relevant figure in the boxes on the site.

It will also show you the effect of cutting the width to 205 at 70 section will underdrive the car basically, you'll use 5-8% more fuel and travel 5% slower.

To compensate increase the tyre section to restore the rolling radius

So if you insist on the 205's you'll need them in 80 section to keep the speedo/odo accurate. You will possibly get less traction on soft surfaces although in some conditions, liquid mud over solid sub, a narrow section is to be preferred.

You may also need five new wheels with narrower rims.

The cut in section will mean that the tyres are stretched into the bead locator and any heavy load may break the bead and drop the tyre into the wheel's well, with the consequent instant and entertaining change to the driving characteristics.

If this did happen you might find yourself without insurance cover for your vehicle or anything you damage on your unexpected excursion so think carefully and check throughly before embarking on your project.

sizes

you might have already checked, but theres usually a list of suitabe tyre sizes on the drivers door pillar. i think 225/70 is the reccomended size, as everybodys seems to have had them on at one point. there are a few good websites out there with 225/70 tyres on there.and the advantage of using 225/70 again is that it wont affect your fuel or speed reading. ive got bigger tyres and my speedo reads 5mph slower than what im actually doing.
hope anything helps...

Many moons ago when I had

Many moons ago when I had one it had 215-75/15's. Not saying that was correct. Just that was what was on it. It might be worth going onto some of these 'bye your tyres over the internet' sites, as some you start by putting in your cars make, model and year. Then the site tells you what tyre size should be fitted to it. Basicly though the choioce is yours. As for fuel consumption, I have found that on most cars putting diffrent hight tyres on doesn't impact overly much. The taller the tyre the lower the rev's for the same speed, but the harder the engine works to maintain those rev's. And smaller tyres the opposit. However wider tyres do tend to suck the juice. More rubber in contact with the road = more friction to overcome = more power required = more fuel to do the same speed. "Ya canna change the laws of physics Jim".
