Engine water leak ....Core plug??

Forum:

Hi guys. Fourtrak TDS '94, Water is dripping underneath. All looks Ok from the top, but of course with all the underside tinware it's not easy to look upwards from below!
It's further back than the rad.... so i just wondered if anyone knew where the core plugs were, & I'm hoping there isn't one hidden by the gearbox a la certain Fords many years ago Sad
I'm still learning my way round the well-built beast so all wisdom sought. Thxs

Hard Core

The most obvious one is the one hidden behind the exhaust, this one is often left as it entails removal of the exhaust system to get at it.

Try radiator sealer first, use a good brand, preferably one which lubricates the cooling system components such as the water pump bearings.
More often than not, this will seal a small leak, but replace the coolant with new, and take the opportunity to thoroughly clean the cooling system first.
Miles is a good brand, but difficult to get hold of, this used to seal bullet holes in ex military vehicles engine blocks, expensive, but it has a money back guarantee.

Isn't rad seal 'cheating'? ;)

Thxs assassin:)
I've had my hand/fingers in every likely place now & whilst the coolant drips on the floor once every 2seconds, my digits emerge dry....(& yes it is coolant as the rad level drops).

There is one hose that I couldn't trace. The one from the water pump that goes between block & alternator; where does it go? - (I'm not even sure what is does?? - The heater hoses are on the other side & water 'heated' manifolds are the stuff of petrol engines only, I thought!).

From personal experience, I

From personal experience, I would be very wary of using a radiator sealer - it managed to seal up a coolant passage on one of my cars (auto choke heater block).

There is a short pipe, maybe 2" long, from the bottom of the thermostat housing to the water pump, which is a bypass hose - if you remove the thermostat you'll see it looks like a typical car thermostat at the top, but it has an additional valve at the base - this closes / opens the bypass pipe. I guess they needed this to ensure some form of circulation when the main valve of the thermostat is shut.

...also, I think the turbocharger is water cooled?

Well if you don't type something 'up there', the software does it for you!

..... Thxs guys, all useful stuff.

So that's where the mystery hose goes........will investigate.

'Barsleaks'....I'm old enough to remember the ads for it in the sixties! -- Though I'd rather find the leak .......(Yeah ok, two more days & I'll throw some goo in the system....then regret it when the rad partially blocks next year Sad )

Just a thought & off-topic. Today I realised the more I drive this mini-truck the more I like it, which is the reverse of my experience with an L-R Defender, & that was free!

Sorted it ... sort of

Intermittent pump leak ....It drips.....flick engine over,top-up, leave for one hour, leak has stopped. & it's been fine for a couple of days now.

Bearings are fine.

Pity there never has been a miracle goo-in-a-bottle cure for worn carbon seals .... has there???

Rad Seal

Try Barsleaks, it is basically machine oild with copper filings in it that get trapped in the leak. It works well as long as you stir it first to remove the copper from the bottom of the jar and then run the engine to ensure circulation. It is cheating but can be a cheap solution and effective.

Mystery hose

This one goes to the "oil cooler" which is basically an oil filled metal cylinder through which a metal coolant tube passes. It is located under the oil filter attached to the oil filter base plate. This was quite badly corroded on the engine I bought recently so yours maybe too if the leak is from this area.
