Hub of the Matter
Several problems afflict the freewheel hubs, these are usually:
Mechanical defects, usually the spring inside them snaps, this jams them and does not allow them to disengage properly. Hubs rely on relative motion (axle shafts turning) to engage them, the spring returns them to the centre position to disengage them.
Corrosion, this is when they are often used off road in predominantly wet conditions, or in areas such as the seaside where the environment can cause this. Many people do not remove them periodically and grease them.
Compacted mud and debris, many off road vehicles suffer from a build up and compaction of mud inside the hubs, this prevents them from working.
Solutions are to remove them and strip them down, ensure they are clean and well packed with grease, look for shards of metal indicating mechanical failure.
Additional problems may be the transfer box, or the 4WD selector has a problem, or excess wear; and the system does not disconnect the 4WD in the transfer case.
freewheeling hubs
had it up on jack today in 2wd turnd front prob by hand and wheels turnd so took hub apart, mine seems to conected permenant to hub after removeing 6 boults had end cap of it has two lugs on it, hub turns with this off, there is a clip
and a washer ,thats all are these perminent fix hubs, as i cant see how it can freewheel, not had it long . and was told it has freewheeling hubsi dont think it has ,dont think there is a problem with transfer box as all turnd in 2wd, thanks ,if eny one can put me strait on the mater.
HUBS
I have assumed that the vehicle is a Sportrak. I believ the same procedure applies to the Fourtrak but am not 100% certain.
There are two types of hubs Manual and auto.
The manual ones appear to be the best but require manual engagemnet via the selector on each hub, turn to Lock to engage and free to disengage.
The Auto Hubs "should" engage when 4wd is selected but when you return to 2wd will not disengage untill you reverse the car for about 4-5 car lengths+/-. If you drive without doing this they will remain engaged and you will not freewheel. Often, as stated by assassin, these Auto hubs seize through lack of use and are more prone to failure. You should engage them frequently just to keep them free remembering obviously the need to reverse the vehicle to free them again and return them to Freewheeling hubs.
You should have a sticker on the drivers door with instructions for 4wd usage.

Hi.
According to my drivers handbook, 3 types of front hubs were fitted to 'earlier ' Fourtraks, Fixed type, Manual type and Auto type hubs. seems you have one with the fixed hubs, at least you will not get trouble with the auto locking mechasnism, and it will save you having to remember to get out and lock the hubs BEFORE you need that extra tractive effort.

but not good
Fixed hubs - extra wear and tear - esp cv joints, lower fuel economy, extra tyre scrubbing,
Full of ideas but no time to do them!!
