Best replacement for Fourtrak

Forum:

Just wondering what would be the best replacment for Fourtrak.I have a 97 Independent, i wouldnt mind getting a late model one with airbag,ABS but that would be extremely difficult..what is the closest natural replacement since fourtraks arent made any more? Im thinking similar size, diesel, 30MPG +, 3 door, hi/low ratio, a tad more modern, airbag, abs, rugged and reliable.

Only things i can think of are:

Ssangyong Korando turbo diesel
Mitsubishi Pajero/Shogun
Toyota Prado/ Colorado (old shape)
Nissan Terrano
Maybe 5 door but similar sized diesel suzuki GV

But for fuel economy..only Ssangyong and Suzuki would be similar.

What do you guys look for? Or do u go back for another old Fourtrak?!

REPLACEMENT 4, 4TRACK

My own choice would be a Landrover Defender, ignore all the Disco's and Range Rovers and fancy off roaders like the Porche etc. Failing that stick with what you have.

The Fourtrak was voted best off roader for many years and those that have come along since tend to pander to the rich, some never go off road other than parking up a kerb and have become status symbols, Chelsea Tractors are for the school run.

OLDMINIMAN

I'm sure that will set a few off!!!!

Thing is, i am NZ based. So

Thing is, i am NZ based. So basically there are no Fourtraks here, except for 2 that i know of. There are quite a few Ruggers/Rockys here and there..but nothing newer than 96, as they stopped importing them then. My Fourtrak which i got off someone who brought it with them from Scotland is a 97 and the newest i have seen. Patrols are too thirsty for me. Hilux surf too large and also most have been thrashed (there are 1000's here...the subaru legacy of the offroad world!!). Defenders too expensive..here u would be lucky to get a 1990 one for 5000 pounds, and mid 90's ones cost 10000 pounds +!! I wouldnt mind some of those late model UK ones(4trak) i have seen with airbags and ABS but apart from importing from UK, not much chance of that.

There are a fair few late model korandos here, and nissan mistrals (terrano 2) plus some Shoguns (3.2L). Some Nissan Safari (patrol in 2.8L form) and loads of Zuks too.

NZ based?

Any possibility of importing a newer Fourtrak from Japan?

but hey, what would I know? I'm just a Gurl!

Fourtrak alternative

hi.

Series 2 Land Rover ,but re our visits to OZ , I was told the best was the old'troop carier' model Land Cruiser, (leaf sprung)but for comfort the more modern style coil sprung versions were prefered.

On a recent visit to South Africa I was impressed with with the capabilitys of these old style Land Cruisers, both station wagon and pick up types. The ride was far better than I would have got from my leaf sprung Fourtrak on the road and over severe terrain.( longer wheel base ??) .Very impresed by these older trucks. And I was told the engines and drive train were realy reliable.the major problem was shock absorbers, they did not last very long !!!. Fuel quality was a problem (petrol) but apparently the engines were quite tolerant of this .

I also found when I was in Saudi Arabia this truck out performed the Toyota Hi Lux in both sand and rock terrain (terrain chaotic as they called it, more rock/pebbles than sand)
V8 Chevys just stood and dug themselves in,very difficult trucks to handle in the conditions and the ride was appalling unless one had a sheet of 1" steel in the bed to give flex in the leaf springs, weight but not volume.

Re your comment on seating/head room , older stlye Land Cruisers ,why not look at replacing the seats.

By the way

..is it a particular model that has airbags, abs..or a limited edition one. They look identical too all the other ones to me!

Replacement for Fourtrak

As a true Foutrack head ( I have four )thats quite a difficult one to ponder on!

My own person choice due to owner experience would be the Nissan Patrol. I have had two Patrols in the past, one of which I still have. The previous one i bought new in 2001 and it was a LWB 3.0 GR turbo diesel.

I kept the car for five and a half years and apart from routine servicing I can honestly say it never cost me a penny in repairs.
It never let me down on a single occasion and nothing ever ever broke.

Would also point out that off road for such a big beast it was truly suberb. I put it through some real extreme hill climbs and decents too and even with her auto box ( combined with power braking on the way down ) she performed well.

Maybe a little heavier on the diesel than your looking for as i average about 26 mpg in my current one but very comfortable to drive and fitted with all the toys including leather.

Ive also looked into land rover but too many problems with them.
What ever you do please dont buy a Freelander. ( NITEMARE )

A friend of mine bought a 02 plate with auto in 2006 for just over £9000 and to date he has spent £6234 on repairs!!!

Needless to say hes changing his mark to Japenese next time!

No Substitute For A Fourtrak

I have been mulling over the same question My Independant Fourtrak TDX is a 93 model quite old now but still in excellent all round condition & with just 60k on the clock so it is just about run in!Question what do I replace it with Landrover someone on here is having a laugh! Having owned quite a few of those overated money pits they are best avoided.Nissan Patrol,s are great but the 2.8 Turbo Diesel one I owned I can vouch for the fact that they just love using diesel. As your Fourtrak is a 1997 model why would you want to swap it in the first place regards .STRM

we have a f reg fourtrak and

we have a f reg fourtrak and a h reg discovery, the thing with landrover is not to buy a new one. get one that is well run in so somebody else has fixed the problems and fitted a new rear floor. defenders seem to be grossly overpriced compared to the disco. compared to the fourtrack the disco is roomier and a smoother drive on rough roads and the kids prefer the 5 doors, but rocky has just gone through the mot needing a wiper blade, (last year they decided the headlights needed adjusting). weve also got a r reg megane, too many sensors and electronical bits and bobs to my mind, both rocky and the disco are old enough to be fixable at home.

have you thought about one

have you thought about one of the older style toyota land cruisers? not do dissimilar to a fourtrak.

yeah have checked old

yeah have checked old landcruisers..wasnt a good fit thou..seat too high or roof too low! Just thinking of something newer but still rugged and reliable. With the price of gas being what it is would have to be same fuel economy as fourtrak or better. Thats why i thought korando..although looks maybe controversial to some (i reckon looks ok), is an honest, strong vehicle with good economy and fairly modern, plus similar size. i wouldve gone for a Terrano as well but they are thirsty and all autos here.

Thou i do like the look of that metallic blue 2001 fourtrak i saw on autotrader..had airbag and abs and a nice chrome grill Wink

Not here

In england maybe..very few here..see one up for sale every 2-3 months.

Best replacement for Fourtrak

A Fourtrak of course, especially if you're towing big loads. Most of the competition just aren't up to it!

Replacement

Just an interesting observation, two of the utilities companies are buying up all newer Fourtrak's, they have set up engineering workshops to fully recondition them to as new condition. This is due to several factors, mainly the durability and reliability of the Fourtrak compared to its only competitor Land Rover. Running costs are also a major factor, the Fourtrak is significantly cheaper to run, fuel costs are far better then LR, they do not break down like LR, and they cost far less to service, this lesson was also learned by British Coal.

In all other respects, the Fourtrak equals the LR, it is good off road, better on road, and it will tow 3500Kgs.

Thought i would pass this on.
