My 4trak sometimes scares me

Forum:

Hi all
I own and adore my 93 independent 4trak. It has a few niggles which I must get fixed namely the power steering belt it screams loudly in hard lock.
The main problem I have is that on rare occasions it scares me. On the odd random occasion it lurches from side to side when braking firmly on both occasions coming down a fairly steep hill. It is very un-nerving any idea why it does it? Also recently in the black ice it lost it big time and I thought I was going over - all I had been taught steer into the skid and stay off the brakes did not work and it lurched so severely it took me across a ghost island into the main carriageway luckly it was early in the morning no one was around. The only thing that stopped it was braking and it worked instantly. This is my first 4x4 but for my work I have driven for years 4x4's vans and small lorrys without any problem. I was looking forward to the recent snow thinking I could go out to play but crawled around like a snail not really knowing if I could trust the car or not.
I live close to Devil's pit in Bedfordshire does anyone ever go there it is considered a experienced off road venue I would love to go and watch and have a go but not in my baby though I only off road in the hot summer with no danger of mud! Thanks T

My tip for when you lose it

When I lose the backend of my Sportrak which isn't often admittedly. I've discovered that the best thing to do what you've always been told as in keep off the brake, etc. However I put the clutch about half way and then bring it back up and I usually regain control.

As for the lurching side to side, it sounds like its occasions where the backend has a fair momentum such as steep hills or if u r going a fair speed. I'd do the fairly obvious check first, such as tyre wear, and check they are not over inflated because i have no control over my Sportraks backend in certain conditions if they are inflated too much, as I am sure a couple of other ppl on here would agree with. But also I would be tempted to check that the backends brakes are fine.

Thanks for the advice

This is a great site thanks. And thanks for the advice I will take my beloved trak to be checked over. Travelling with my children I need it to be safe. Tracey

Devils Pit

This place is the mutts nutts and has green, red and black courses. on green you stand a minimal chance of damage and loads of road cars go round it the red is slightly harder and black is well tricky and can only be used with full roll cage harnesses and helmets.
plenty folk to help out if you get stuck, and I go everytime its on.
Come and watch on the 29th, there are plenty spectator parts and its a good day.
Keith

Thanks

Hi Keith thanks I will go along to Devils Pit and have a look. It looks such fun but watching is all I will ever do - can't cope with the repair bills and need my baby for the school/supermarket run - how boring! Tracey
