F20 Wheel cylinder - Where From?

Forum:

Does anyone know where I could get new wheel cylinders or rebuild kits for the brakes on my F20? Thanks in advance.

Wheel cylinder

Don't know about new parts, but I once fixed one by using the pistons and seals from a VW beetle cylinder which was the same internal diameter. It worked fine for quite a few years and at £15 off the shelf on a Sunday morning 120 miles from home I was happy!

I converted my F20 to rear discs and haven't looked back since.

Alastair, Thanks that is

Alastair,
Thanks that is useful information. Did you have discs on the front already? Mine still has drums all round but I believe that they can be upgraded fairly easily using parts from a fourtrak axle end. Disc's are definately something I want to do and if I can't get any wheel cylinders easily it may happen sooner than I had orignally planned.

F20 brakes

Hello again

Mine is a 1983 model so came with the front discs already. There are some subtle differences between the calipers fitted to the later F20 and the fourtrak which means they are not directly interchangable but bolting the whole lot on from the hubs outwards should work OK. The pads, non-vented discs and bearings are the same as the fourtrak so the hub is probably the same too. The stub axle is the same on the disc and drum F20 so I can't see why the rest of it won't just fit straight on.

The rear disc conversion is a copy of the Rhino Ray version for the SJ and is completely bolt on. None of it is my design, but I made the necessary parts following drawings done by another Steve on this forum a few years ago. It uses Rover 820 rear calipers and SJ front discs. I don't know if the master cylinder in the drum version of the F20 will displace enough fluid to work 4 calipers as it is a slightly smaller diameter than the disc braked version. But then again, a fourtrak one will probably go on OK. I can email the drawings if you want them.

By the way, I have also converted mine to diesel which means I have a few spare parts which I don't have any need for. If you are interested, I have a Pertronix Ignitor electronic ignition kit with Flame Thrower coil (works a treat if you keep burning points like I did - and much more damp resistant for off roading in the mud), a new old stock head gasket set, a genuine sump gasket, a brand new Lucas alternator and a new distributor cap. I'm open to any offer above the cost of postage!!

Sorry to hi-jack your thread,

Regards - Alastair

Alastair, Thanks for the

Alastair,
Thanks for the details, if you could email me the drawings for the rear that would be great, I will send you a pm with my email address. I had heard before that it was possible to fit the suzuki discs without too much modification to the rear but hadn't seen any details. I have had some information from another forum this morning and have been told that for the front it is a simple bolt on swap for fourtrak items so I think I will go out and get myself some of those. I will probably need the whole of the brake system from the fourtrack as mine is quite an early one so I don't even have servo assistance at the moment.
Thanks for the offer of the other spare parts but mine has also been converted to diesel.
Cheers,
Steve

Spot on with the rear disk

Spot on with the rear disk thing. Have seen the results. Poss the 'other Steve' mentioned above's wagon. As foe the front though, I'm fairly certain that I remember me and a mate trying very hard to make F75 disks go onto an F50 once. Also prety sure we failed. Can't remember why though... Think we tried spliting it at the swivel barings, but they proved to be diffrent sizes. Also think the same problem arised when trying to just change the hubs them selves. Of course just changing the hubs would still leave the problem fabricating piston carriours. Think it might be best to modify the rear disk design for the front, using larger disks and pistons? This may all be rubish as it was a good number of years back, but I do know we gave it up as a bad job in the end.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Slaves To Brakes

Slave cylinders are the same as early Toyotas, sorry cannot remember which part number, they were fitted to earlier Hi-ace vans, and Hi-lux pick ups, it may be a trip to the Toyota specialists to match one.
My rears were replaced with Hi-lux items as they are the same.

Thanks for all the replies.

Thanks for all the replies. Assassin I will be making a visit down to a toyota specialist to see if I can match something up although if it is possible I think fourtrak front discs would be the goal. Nev the information I got on the front disc converison came from this thread, http://www.daihatsu4x4.eu/viewtopic.php?t=894 , I think I will give it a go I can always put the parts on ebay if I can't get it to work. I will post up the results either way as it may be of use to some one else. Alastair just in case you don't get my reply to your email I just want to confirm I got all the instructions, drawings amd photos. It all looks relatively straight forward I really appreciate the time you took to sort out all the instructions. Thanks again.

Steve

Ah. See where they are

Ah. See where they are comming from. Don't think we tried spliting from one to the other there... Just requires fabricating the piston carrier for the F20 swivle housing. Basicly same as rear. Looks good. Wish we'd thought of it... DOH!

Everything from 18 outwards !!

Title says it all. Much easier than trying to explain. I have a set of microfiche for the F10 through to F50 with all part number revisions and changes on it. I'll check whatever you need to see if it matches with the Fourtrack numbers if that is useful (microfiche reader is in the loft so its not cold at this time of year !!)

Alastair, Thanks for the

Alastair,
Thanks for the offer of the part numbers, at the moment I think I will be ok but if I think of anything can I get back to you? I have been looking through the manuals on the WARFS site for the F75 and certainly some of the components diagrams look the similar to those shown in the F20 workshop manual.
I guess as you have stuff like the parts microfiche you also have workshop manuals but if you don't and need any information I have copies of the general workshop manual for the F20 and the also the manual for the 2.5 (DG) diesel engine.
