I think I might have problems in getting a conformity certificate for that one. Great if you have a farm. I hope someone on the forum gets it and posts some pics. of it performing. Facinating rear traction contraption.

that is exactly what i need

that is exactly what i need at the moment, i have my sporty very stuck in a boggy feild. spent four hours diging, jacking, using sand ladders and i am still bloody stuck! the extreme frustration of having no locking centre diff!

You're non existant centre locking diff is not necessary as no centre diff is fitted, the front and rear propshafts are connected by a sliding ring gear thus locking them together whenever 4WD is engaged. This is locked solid providing equal power to each axle and a permanently locked centre diff.

So when i am in 4wd my front

So when i am in 4wd my front wheels should be pulling as much as my back wheels? i am geting wheel spin from the back right wheel but nothing from the left rear and also it seems there is no momvment from the front! could it be that the automatic locking hubs have had it?

If neither of your front wheels spin, then you dont have 4wd - odd that!!, and no unless fitted seperately you wont have a locking rear or front diff, so if one wheel cant grip all the power goes to that wheel and spins on the same axle.

ha! mabey i should have

ha! mabey i should have phrased my answer a bit beter, reading over my comments i am not sounding to smart! (take it slowly for the novice!) Right so far i understand that neither the front or the rear diffs lock when 4wd is selected, so in theory if i am stuck, the front wheel with the least traction and the rear wheel with the least traction will only spin, and the other wheels are useless? Also as there is no centre diff does this mean that there is a 50/50 split of power to the front and the back diffs?
As i have no wheels at the front being driven this surely suggests that the automatic locking hubs have had it.

One other question, is there a 4x4 which can lock its front and back diff when put in 4wd and then unlock them when 2wd is selected and if so, why arnt sportraks fited with such a mechanism.

There is alot of 4x4 vehicles out there with some sort of locking diffs on the axles, thats what traction control does - sort off, the old generation 4x4's are all mainly mechanical locking diffs if they have them, toyota, mercedes fitted them, cant think at the minute, there is aftermarket stuff available though from the likes of kam diffs etc to replace your diffs with but if you can find one for a sportrack youll be lucky, i believe you can change to toyota ones but dont quote me on that, also yes i would say your front auto hubs are kapputski - they never last - fit manuals.

Ok kool, cheers for your replies. Just out of interest do the fourtraks have mechanical locking diffs? I am guessing the reason why sportraks don't have them is because they aren't really designed for heavy off roading? If this is true why do people spend so much time modifying them when they could spend money on a more worthy 4x4. Don't get me wrong I am not slating the sportrak I find it great fun and some of the off road I have completed in 2WD is very surprising, but in terms of how good they are off road they seem to be pretty low down in the league, as they don't have mechanical locking diffs, there clearance isn't great, they are petrol so the engine is hard to waterproof to the extent that a snorkel would be pointless and they have a small engine. Just would be good to hear some opinions on them. Cheers, Chris.
