Non starting indy

Forum:

Wonder if anyone can help,i have a 95 f78 indy which never fails, however after changing the timing belt it will not start. The timing marks were all alligned when the new belt went on,the engine turns over smoothly and there is no smoke from the tailpipe, any thoughts would be a great help, regards,Ally

Provided you are certain that all was lined up when you did the belt then check all the connections around the engine bay that may imobilse the thing from starting. It may be as simple as a sensor disconnected or the LT wires off the coil or similar.

Checked all cables and connections, all good, maybe have to accept defeat and book the bloody thing into my local garage and see wot they say. Thanks anyway,Ally

Compression stroke.

I bet you have refitted the belt with the distributor at cylinder 1 for exhaust. Did you turn anything whilst the old belt was removed? Number 1 cylinder must be on compression. At TDC the distributor must be firing cylinder 1, exhaust valve closed. Cylinder 1 should be on compression stroke ..... remove spark plug and put you finger over the hole, feel for engine compressing the cylinder. Unfortunately you will need to remove the cam belt, position the distributor and align the timing markes - then refit the belt.
If engine is firing on exhaust stroke it will never start!
A check:
1. Remove plug number 1 cylinder.{nearest radiator]
2. Out of gear, ignition off. Turn engine by hand or push whilst in gear. Feel for max compression in cylinder 1. Remember the crank turns twice ... first turn exhaust and next is compression. Stop turning/pushing when the cylinder is at max compression.
3. Remove distributor cap. Check the rotor is pointing at electrode for cylinder 1.
4. Check the timing mark on the flywheel. I bet its 180 degrees inacurate - hence firing on exhaust stroke.

Thanks Mace,
