Top Gear, Green Laning.,

Forum:

Did anyone see this?????
I know it wont make a hapenny worth of difference, but heres a copy of an email I've sent to the top gear team. If you feel strongely enough, plese send one of your own, or even a copy of this one with your name on it?

Dear Top Gear,

I am an avid watcher of your show. I look forward to each weeks bout of info. and highjinks. I am also an avid off roader. I am writing as the latter. I have just watched the 'green laning / fox hunting' segment of this weeks show. I found it most amusing, outright hilarious in fact.

Unfortunately the Ramblers Association do not appear to have a sense of humour and many of their members genuinely believe that off roaders do drive just like that, doing just as much damage, and without the land owners consent (or recompense). These types of people are unfortunately feeble minded enough not to get the joke. These people probably wont watch your program about 'planet destroying gas guzzling monsters', but undoubtedly they know someone, who knows someone who does, and by the time they hear about it the Terios was faster, the mud was deeper, and the damage was on a Biblical scale! It is then myself and other enthusiasts who get it in the neck.

I feel about my Daihatsu (used for towing and playing, but not the school run!) as strongly as you do about your Alfa, or Porsche, or Rolls, etc, etc. With our government already appearing to have it in for 4x4's we need all the help we can get. I'm afraid Top Gear has done us a great disservice.

Please could it be made clear at some later point in the series that what Jeremy was doing in no way resembles Green Lanning. Hill Rallying or Comp. Safari (where the ground is private, and paid for) yes, but not green laning (where it is a public un-made road with all the laws that entails, including a speed limit).

Thank you for 'listening'.

Nev. K

I have to agree.

I couldn't have put it better, I may just use this as a template.

Going of the tracks, speeding, crushing wild flowers and acting like fools is not the way to use green lanes.

you think they would have learnt from the discovery3 test they did in scotland which can no longer be found anywhere on the net it was sooooo bad they pulled it.

I just wish they would use a quarry or private land for crazy 4x4 challenges.

TOP GEAR

I have to agree that the antics of Clarkson and Co often are great fun but do go too far on occaisions. Having been an avid fan for some years and read most of his books I have come to the conclusion that Jeremy is a spoilt dickhead and that the show is becoming a display of his ego rather than a programme of informative information.

The show has evolved over many years and has moved away from the cars that most of us drive on to those that many of us could not even dream of affording and if we could would probably never waste the money on. It is a sad reflection that the show, although popular no doubt, has become spoilt by a big show off and biggoted brat who initially is funny but after some time becomes irritably annoying. None of the presenters appear to have an idea of how a car works or how to maintain one, all they know is how to drive them to their limits and then claim that as testing the car.

I admit that I watch it for a laugh which is sad for what was once a slightly more serious motoring programme that tested cars like the Allegro with it's square steering wheel, the Metro, as a non starter replacement for the Mini. OK they were crap but, we could all afford them, how many of us have a BUGATTI VAIRON least of all can spell it.

WHO IS THE STIG...ANY GUESSES?????????

It's funny you mention the

It's funny you mention the ego thing. Not something I can substantiat, but there where strong rumers that the ego was the main reason Quinten Willson gave Top Gear up. A loss there. He actually seemed to have a good down to earth idea about cars.

Also, and again this is only hearsay, when they did the Channel crossing thing? One of my friends is on the Dover Lifeboat. He was chatting to one of the film crew, while they were waiting to see which presenter drowned first. Aledgedly Captain Slow had a plane for some kind of car / hovercraft hybread. But it was too good when they tried it out. Clarkson through a proper 2 year old tantram, and the idea was scrapped...

STIG????

Hi killragi

Yep, that is who I thought of but having seen him at Goodwood on the box yesterday he has put on a bit of weight around the middle (as a lot of us do with age) since the Audi Quattro days and the stig is like a double breasted earwig.

a good laff

i watch top gear cos its hillarious and i take nothing on it serious cos its just entertainment with vehicles, those guys get to do what most of us could only dream of, just wish everyone else would take it light heartedly too!! no doubt next sunday there will be a list of complaints as usual, but if people dont like it why do they watch it - because its fun! i thought the drag hunt on sunday was brilliant and wish it showed more footage - especially when the terios went in the ditch head first then magically turned around (hmmm land rover on standby tow rope duty methinks!), but i would have thought that it is obvious that this isnt green laning to everyone!!?? Isnt it???.....

Unfortunatly I have found in

Unfortunatly I have found in life that not everone is that inteligent. Especialy if being stupid helps prove the point they are making. I do enjoy Top Gear (as I said in the e-mail to them). I also take everything they do as a joke. However I am well aware that some people would not, and that those who are against green laning will use this as amunition.

I hope that clarifies my point?

THANKS LURCH

Thanks for that I hadn't seen it.

I suppose in reality all off roaders do not drive like that but whether it will do much good to the causes of greenlaners will remain to be seen. The Terios did very well, the driver...perhaps not so well. Was it entertainment...yes!!

I thought the Terios looked

I thought the Terios looked fantastic and put up with the abuse really well. Shame the TG team forgot to mention it.
