For those that thought "Watzing Matilda" was based on a myth. Near this steel sign is the place where the events actually happened. Also in the McKinlay Shire is the town of McKinlay, which has the famous Walkabout Creek Hotel, of Crocodile Dundee fame.
These towers are placed roughly every 50 to 80km, usually on the highest piece of ground available. They are probably about 100mtrs high. The dishes are microwave, mainly for transmission of telephone and data. Remote homesteads have smaller versions, which tranmit to these towers, which then hook them into the main telephone system.
On the road, the following pictures show the open road, flat, wide, open, and pretty much featureless. This type of terrain goes on and on for hundreds of kilometres.
