Several people have ended up

Several people have ended up mounting the socket on the rear door. You may need to make up a short extention lead to use this opption though.

I usually modify them by

I usually modify them by mounting them onto the tow bar crossmember itself, this is the 100mm square section which runs between the chassis rails.

Bore a hole in the member just large enough to accommodate the wiring plug grommet, drill and tap the mounting holes, and bolt together.

One other option i have used on many vehicles is to weld the original mounting plate directly to the crossmember. Use three of four good stitches to ensure it is held properly, this saves drilling the towbar itself.
