Hello and welcome. Issues are

Hello and welcome.

Issues are hard use which can lead to a couple of gearbox problems, one being the mainshaft nut and the wear of synchro rings.

Corrosion of the rear floor and tubular crossmember may be a problem on some models, so keep it in good condition.

Automatic hubs can be a problem if not correctly maintained, but again is an easy fix.

Generally they are robust and need little more than routine servicing to keep them i good working order for many years. Time does take its toll on all vehicles so expect the usual with older vehicles. There is the information and expertise to help if it is required, and many will willingly help if you cannot find the answer through the search facility.

Hi and welcome

Hi.

Lots of info available via the "Search" box. When posting add your trucks details (ie - example '92 Fourtrak 2.8 TDX) this helps others to help you, with a clear description of the problem. It also helps if you avoid "text" speak.

Take time to look at the "How it Works" section, top of page. new article's due out soon re " How the 4x4 system works" and read the section re "Auto and Manual Hubs".

Members range from "Gung Ho" mud pluggers to the mature types who wish to prolong the life of a really good truck, so you will see a range of replies to a post, though the technical info is a result of folks experience.

One major comment I have to make Is DO NOT use "Fully Synthetic" Oil in the engine, use a Mineral Oil or "Semi Synthetic" Oil. The engine tolerances were not engineered to the finer tolerances required with the use of "Fully Synthetic " oil.

As a new owner, change the "Cam Belt" asap if you do not know when it was changed previously, reverse flush the cooling system and change the coolant/antifreeze, drain the gearbox,s/diffs and replace oils (use EP90), replace the the fuel and air filter ( Milner's Offroad do a filter kit at a good price ,dealers top of page ), along with the engine oil. All for piece of mind. ( gear box filler/level plug on drivers side of box). Also sugest you purchase a "Service Manual", available as "download" or "CD" from the site, again top of page (service manuals).

What have I got

Hi.

From the Ebay details, I would describe your truck as a F75 "91 Fourtrak, TDX, 2.8 " that is year as stated, leaf spring suspension, 2.8 Lltr Turbo Diesel engine

Do you have "Auto Hubs or Manual Hubs" fitted to the front axle. Manuals require you to turn a tab to lock for engagment, this is apparant on the hubs ( arrows to 4x4 or 2x4) Auto Hubs will engage on selection of 4hi via the dash switch or selection of 4Lo via the transfer gear stick .

This will be relevant to post's you may make as to problems with 4x4 engagement.

addition- From the Ebay images it looks like Manual hubs !!

Hi.

"also im told that the landrovers are better off road than these but im wary on that because these feel excellent off road anyone an opinion on this."

You cannot compare a leaf sprung Fourtrak against a Coil Sprung LandRover, , compare ability like for like, as in standard equipment fitted !!!, so many factors, tyre choice, drivers ability, so many variables. The biggest factor walk/read the route, and and use the experience and skills learnt.

If you want to experience ultimate offroad capability in a 4x4, try getting a ride in a Unimog. After moving up to a 406 Unimog from a SWB Series 3 Land Rover fitted with Dumper tyres and driving the Unimog for two years, involving serious offroad use in the Highlands, The BEST 4x4 EVER !!! And she was not bad on the road, even with Semi Agri type grip tyres fiited, just the thing for the Tesco run, which was did as needed.

thanks for reply ive noticed

thanks for reply

ive noticed that experience is a big part, ive got myself it 2 irreversible scraps all ready but i was with someone who towed me out.
last night at 10pm i went down a ditch into swappy land and next to a stream.
i could not go forward because of stream and could not reverse because of no grip and high ditch wall it took 2 hours to wrench me loose ,i did not get home till 1.30am so lesson no1 dont go into a situation with no escape route.

im buying some better tyres hopefully pirelli off roaders for around

Learning the hard way

Hi.
Your learning. In the dark, probably had a 4x4 for a little while, no backup truck available. This subject has been posted before, so no other comment except your learning the hard way.

Cannot believe you can obtain 4 good quality offroad tyres, new ones?? for

Edward (ews) '92 Fourtrak 2.8 TDX

no sorry ews they are second

no sorry ews they are ebay second hands but 80% tread im told.

and yeah i was on my own when i got stuck but luckly my freind only lived about 3 miles away and he helped me out,he wasnt too impressed though in the middle of the night but live and learn i dont think i could ask him again at that time and when your stuck its perminent you go from comfort warmth of car to walking in the mud and rain in a split second but the truck handled well it was only my fault for going into a place i could not go forward or reverse in , the truck flew across the rest of the muddy field easily.

i think ill start to look for more professional places now .

Is it better than a Land

Is it better than a Land Rover or not? Landie fans may claim not, but as it has already been stated, it comes down to many factors. Traks are shorter and more compact, this means they can get across most terrain easily, and they are inherently more reliable. It is this reliability and simplicity which endears them to many, and they can often beat a landie off road. One old saying from a convert from Landies to Traks is "if the engine ain't running you ain't going nowhere". This from a man who spent most weekends repairing his Land Rover instead of off roading.

i think thats why i bought

i think thats why i bought the fourtrak in the end everybody and i mean everyone warned me about landrovers and rangerovers, but i could not find another 4x4 that floated my boat but the fourtrak DOES!!!!.

and to the person who replyed to me below thanks for telling me about milners, a little late for the filter kit but they look like a good company.

ps what were the major faults with landys if you have time that is.
