mounting cb aerial

Forum:

I have a 94 fourtrak and im having problems with where to mount a cb aerial on it as there is not much metal on the roof and already have a britax light in the middle of the metal roofinf area. I have thought about going through the fibre glass back roof but wondered if i would have problems with it cracking or leaking? any suggestions would be greatly recieved. Thanks

Gutter mount

I have recently mounted an antenna on my (commercial) TDS fourtrak, I did this using a gutter mount towards the back, and ran the cable behind the plastic piece at the back of the back, blanked panel and through the vent and the through to the front under the carpet along the transmission tunnel, to the center console. Just how i did it, seems to be working at the moment.

you should be ok mounting it

you should be ok mounting it to the fiberglass, just be careful, i slowly drilled a tiny pilot hole then, again very slowly, widened it with a larger drill bit to the desired size, then 2 small circular bits of rubber, like rubber washers, inside and out, with a little silicone made it watertight.

hope its some help

Fitting it to a fibreglass roof will not work, it needs a ground plane to work which needs to be metal.

A CB arial (any arial) will

A CB arial (any arial) will work a lot better if mounted onto a metal serface. There is a lot of tcnical stuff as to why, but belive me it will work mounted to plastic, but no nearly as well. Even the magmount ones suffer a little as they don't make dirrect contact with the metal surface. Having said that I always use magmounts.
Personally on a 4x4 I always use a base loader twig, and put it on the bonnet, near the center, but off to the pasenger side. I put a baonit conection on between the arial and the mag (readily avalible part for CB arial). Then leave the mag in place, and put the arial away when not needed. Having said that in the past I have just left them in place all the time.
The reasons for bonnet mounting for me are:
1) it's less likely to be ripped off when off road.
2) it's eisier to mount as it's steel (mag mount).
3) having a large metal arewa bellow the arial makes it work more efficiently (especially when transmiting).
And having done this with various 4x4's over the last decade and a half I have never been asked about disrupted line of sight by the old Bill.
Only warning, don't use a centre loaded arial, or one of the sprung ones, as they will hit the cars roof or windscrean when off road. I seen a wayward CB twig take out a windscrean befor.
