Forum:
i changed gearbox oil , it was overfilled as about 600ml came out of filler plug hole before id opened the bottom plug but the oil that came out was good and similar to what i put back in.
i then started on the front diff i opened the upper filler plug as suggested to ensure i can refill and again, and this also was overfilled
but this time the oil that came out was very thick id say similar in thickness to a mcdonalds thick shake(sorry for that could not think of a better comparison)and alot thicker than what went back in,ive drove it home and all seems to be well no noises or anything , but im worried that someone has put this thick stuff in for a reason.
but i dont know any advice would be apriciated.
im not going to do the back diff untill ive asked you for advice
thanks
The front diff oil is usually
The front diff oil is usually thicker if the vehicle has been used because the front axle is not driven. The rear axle is driven all the time so the heat will thin down the oil, this will make it easier to drain if it is hot.
If the diffs are filled on a ramp, jack, or axle stands then the vehicle will not be level, overfilling will occur. This amount is not a problem.
yes i think you were right
yes i think you were right about the ramps/stands
ther rear diff was well underfill so might explain it.
all seems well now anyway
thanks mate

The best option is to
The best option is to pre-measure the oil so it has the correct quantity, i do this and add just a little more. Measuring jugs are available cheaply from household stores and are pretty accurate.
Get one of the hand held suction guns for sucking out old oil and suck up the new oil with this, squirt into the axle with it raised in the air.
