Hi everyone, ive just bought a 94 fourtrak lwb 2.8 tdx.. ive just noticed that when i start it up there is occasionally(not always) a slight delay between turning the key and the relay clicking in to activate the starter motor... Is this normal or is it the start of a fault developing... thanks guys.. Mick
This is fairly typical, if it
This is fairly typical, if it an excessive delay it is not.
problem solved
Hi all, ive found out that any delay isnt really normal on start up.... I ended up changing the starter relay and the battery which solved the problem totally.. the engine now turns over and starts instantly and strongly.. hope this is of help... thanks all... Mick
Battery
The 12v battery is producing less amps than required to power the starter. It is likely the battery is beginning to fail.
Try fully charging the battery. If the 'problem' is gone then the solution is a new battery - always get a 'heavy duty' battery rather than the basic battery which manufacturers fit. A 'heavy duty' battery has an additional plate so boosting the amps.
YES THAT WAS THE CASE, I
YES THAT WAS THE CASE, I ENDED UP FITTING A COMMERCIAL BATTERY WHICH WAS THE SAME SIZE AS THE ONE I REMOVED(IT FILLS THE TRAY). THE ONLY DIFFERENCE WAS THE POLES WERE ON OPPOSITE SIDES WHICH WASNT A PROBLEM AS THE CABLES EASILY REACHED AND CLEARANCE WAS MORE THAN ADEQUATE.. THE ENGINE NOW STARTS PERFECTLY EVERY TIME.... THANKS, MICK....
Starting delay
Just getting back into the world of fourtraks :o) having just bought a 95 TDX...cant understand why i ever sold my last one ! But having a similar problem..turn the key..slight delay, then engine fires..looks like I too need a new battery... thought it may be the starter motor on the way out..and found an interesting thing on ebay last night..a guy selling "starter motor repair kits" ! never heard of them, but when you read what this guy has to say..it kinda makes sense. I,ll go down the battery route first though...also..whats the heaviest duty battery you can fit in a foutrtak
my current one is a 90/720, which I think is the standard one
but is there any benefit on going as big as I can
Good to be back in the fold :o)Colin
