Changing diesel pump

Forum:

Hi all, i'm a new one here and own half a fourtrak (the other half being a 1970 Series 2a landy thats is home to the Daihatsu engine!!). Unfortunately my diesel pump failed 2 days after buying it but have sourced a new recon one on ebay but not to sure on fitting it as my engine is the early type with a chain and need to know what i'm likely going to need to do and where the timing marks are. I guess the chain is lubed with oil so will all my engine oil leak everywhere when i remove the metal cover? Can i reuse the chain after it has been removed? Are all 2.8td fourtrak fuel pumps the same if not are they inter-changeable (please say yes as its too late and gone and bought one!)
Sorry for all questions but have only done a transit di diesel pump before and that was fitted with a cambelt.

Early Fourtak engines......

Hi,

I have an early Fourtrak (Rocky F70 2.8ltr non-turbo diesel) 1985 with a metal cam cover - I've been told by several sources that the metal cover versions (as opposed to plastic covers) have direct gear drives and not a cambelt or chain drive - although I've not yet removed the cover on mine. This of course may affect the the pump fittings.

Can anyone else add anything?

Let us know how you get on.

Hi all, Just to let you all

Hi all,
Just to let you all know how i got on. Well its all done now and running and starting better than before. You were right svoburner the ones with metal covers are gear driven. The way i did it was that i marked each cog with a line so that i could see if i had moved the timing, undid nut holding cog onto diesel pump, (had to hit the pump off with quite a few large blows with a lump hammer-watch those fingures as it hurts when you remove skin of knuckels!). Then i put both pumps side by side, rotated new pump so that the woodruff key was in the same place as the old pump then fitted the newish pump, turned engine over by hand to make sure all the marks i had made lined up again. If it does then hey presto, put it all back together then try and bleed it up (i had to use a bit of easystart in the end).
I hope that helps someone else tochange there diesel pump if the need arises.
