shock

Forum:

ive been going around checking brakes out and hammerite painting the chassis and inner arches etc.

ive noticed that inside the leaf springs at the rear is a shock / damper if thats what there called, and on the drivers side rear it has rotted through on the top end of shock /damper.
would this be an mot failure and how easy are they to change id imagine they are hard to change as there under spring tension??

my mot is due in june so id like to know and if it may be worth uprating these springs if it has to be done and what id upgrade too??

thanks

If it is the thin seperators

If it is the thin seperators between individual leaves then they are to allow the leaf to move freely against the next one. If it is this it is not a failure.

Use old engine oil and paint the springs to lubricate instead.

They are the shock absorbers

They are the shock absorbers or suspension dampers, depending upon which part of the world you live.

If they are rotted it would be worth replacing them as they will usually have internal wear as this rot takes time to establish.

Just fit a direct replacement, these are fine; but what do you want to do with the springs? make them softer of stiffer. They are reasonably stiff, making them stiffer will reduce road handling charateristics, but be better for heavy towing. Softer springs make for a slightly better road ride, and better off road abilities.

It is very much a case of what suits you, and the requirements and needs of your vehicle's use.

i was hopeing not to touch

i was hopeing not to touch the springs to be honest as they seem in good nick.
i dont want to spend uneccessarly but i need it mot worthy for next month.

thanks mate

Everyman is the architect of his own future.

If the springs are fine then

If the springs are fine then just replace the shocks as pairs, if it is the rear then just replace the rear pair, likewise with the front.

Just one pointer for when you

Just one pointer for when you do it. You have to find and remove a cover plate above the shock from inside the car in order to undo the top mounting. If you don't have carpets it's fairly obviouse, if you do they are under the carpet directly behind the front seats.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

shock!

Like Assassin said you MUST replace the pair. Shockers must ALWAYS BE REPLACED IN PAIRS!!!
also, if they are that bad I would CHECK THE FRONT ONES!!!!!as these affect your braking big time!!!
good luck with MOT
