Newbie buying a YRV turbo, help

Forum:

Hi, all. I'm going to look at a 53 plate YRV turbo auto tomorrow, is there anything I should look out for on this car. I don't want to end up buying a lemon.
Any comments appreciated.

Hello Future owner Smile

As an owner of one of these for over 2 years now these are the things to look out for on the car:

- Exhaust. The original exhaust is known to fail especially at the point where the exhaust connects to make a dual outlet.

- The rear anti-roll bar underneath has been known to snap under preassure and was replaced under warranty by Daihatsu with an uprated version

- Auto-boxes have been known to fail on these, so check the condition of the auto-box fluid, there is a dipstick located back right, should be cherry red.

- These cars have a 6 months service interval, check to make sure that the service book has the required 6 month stamps in place. These consist of a minor oil and filter change to full service. Luckily these cars have a cam chain and not a belt so these rarely get changed because of this.

- Brake discs and pads are another part that may need replacing, and unfortunatley the Turbo model does not use the same brake discs and pads as a standard YRV. Standard discs are 234MM, Turbo Discs are 246MM, yet a lot of people and dealerships have been caught out over this and may mean you pay more to get these replaced. Just for reference the discs are the same as the Daihatsu COPEN.

Apart from that can't think of anything else apart from the standard checks on a car. One thing I had a problem with was a leaking windscreen, which resulted in an 1" flood after a bad rain storm in both the drivers and passenger footwells, this was due to an ill fitted replacement windscreen, as this has to marry up to the panoramic roof glass.

Everything else on these cars are reliable as with all Daihatsu's. The only thing you may feel let down by, unless it's been modified is the handling and the tyres. In a straight line these cars are quick off the mark, going round corners requires a bit of modification. Oh if any parts needs to be replaced on the car then you are talking a fair bit of money, especially if bought from the dealers, so worth inspecting carefully.

Good luck with your purchase. Hopefully we get another YRV turbo owner on here, as there were only 210 of these made, and some were crashed by hasty owners Sad

Hi and welcome

Hi and welcome Freakboy.

Theres not much that has gone wrong and i think so far all of us have found a solution to the problem one way or another

Service history...oil every 3,000mls, brake fluid and coolant change at 2yrs/24,000mls, Check underneath especialy around the rear arches etc....very light rust is normal although not desirable.
Front brake discs wear quickly and alot more so on the inside....expensive to replace although the pads are cheap.

Exhaust rear section, it can snap at the Y section. Depends if its got the MK1 that fails or MK2 version. You can tell the difference by...MK1 is mild steel and has outward rolled flange on the tail pipes and the MK2 is black painted stainless steel with inward rolled tail pipes.

Rear anti-roll brackets can snap...the replacements are alot more robust looking quarter inch/6mm thick angle iron.

Engine noise at 1800revs or under has been identified as the serpentine belt and its tensioner pulley..nothing to be alarmed about...belt can be changed and pulley lubed.

Hope its a good one and you join us! Smile

Dammit.

Just rang the guy before I set off and it's been sold. I'm in Hull and the car was in Bradford. He said it had been there for weeks too, which doesn't make things better. I'm gonna look out for another one of these cars though as there aren't many cars the Mrs likes that i'm willing to buy. It was mainly for her to drive as i've got a heavily modded Aerodeck.
Thanks for all the replies, i'll make good use of them.

Un-lucky

Was this the Black one on Autotrader? If so then that one and many on the site have been up for sale for a few months. If it's any consolation it took me nearly 2 years to find one for sale that was relatively close to me. There is a silver one for sale on a 2004 plate but it's quite pricey in Cannock, Staffordshire, if you are willing to travel. Failling that there are also YRV Turbos for sale on E-bay. There was someone on here selling a black one not long ago, check out the Image Gallery pages.

Yrv turbo

Hi,
Just reading your post about Yrv turbo, I was looking for one 3 years ago and like other people state found it find 1, so bidded on an F-speed on Ebay for a laugh (my mrs needs auto) and won it for a very low price. I find the 1.3 plenty fast enough as the car is very tall and can get twichy in fast corners. I love my F speed and would struggle to replace it, goes like stink when you drive with gear shift buttons and VVTI cuts in :):-). The non-turbo is cheap to run and parts are easier to find, so I'd say try both before you buy.
Cheers Marcus
