Hi Guys,
Can anyone advise as to the following
From cold the sporti starts no problem, drive approx 1 mile slowing down and it cuts out, does not start straight away needs to be turned over 3/4 times.
Another time it will run but feel restricted, engine manegement light will show, then it will suddenly seem to clear and run fine. Also can smell petrol from time to time
Any one got any ideas as this is driving me round the twist.
Thanks in advance guys.
have you changed the fuel
have you changed the fuel filter?
Is the tank vent blocked, or the fuel pipes (rubber) perished so that they are collapsing?
Fuel pump?
cheers
Rob
Try ............
Obviously a fuel problem.
Change the air filter.
Change/clean the fuel filter.
Check all lines for a kinked fuel line.
Try running sporty with he fuel cap slackened ... could be fuel starvation.
Remove the fuel filler cap - the tank is pressurised so it hisses when cap is unscrewed. Check the air valve is not blocked in the cap.
NOTE .... my fuel tank was leaking due to the tank pressure. A small hole drilled through the fuel cap had no effect on the running but it did stop the smell of petrol!
Remove the distributor cap/rotor and clean the rotor. Check the 5 electrodes inside the cap are clean and not burned away. If in doubt renew the rotor and the cap.

One tip if sporty has a carb.
1. remove the air filter giving direct access to the intake.
2. get a clean cotton cloth and screw it into a BIG ball - big enough to block the intake but not small enough to get sucked inside.
3. start the engine and hold at high revs - at same time block the intake with the cloth ball so the engine SUCKS. This will clean any blockages in the fuel jets.
4. or rev the engine whilst pouring REDEX into the intake. Not to much or the engine will stop. Keep it ticking over for 30sec and then rev the engine. Smokes from the exhaust but it cleans out the carb.
