Timing off by a tooth

Forum:

I just restarted my 2.8 td after a timing belt change and it is running rough and only for a few seconds before it stalls. It would seem I got the timing off by a tooth. Any experience with this exact problem? Did I do any damage?

EDIT: This morning I opened the timing cover back up and carefully examined my digital photos of the belt before I did anything. There are suppossed to be 21 cogs of the timing belt between the injection pump pulley timing mark and the camshaft pulley timing mark, 36 cogs between the camshaft mark and crankshaft mark, and 51 cogs between the crankshaft mark and the injection pump pulley mark. My situation is that it now is positioned with 37 cogs between the camshaft timing mark and the crankshaft timing mark. So the obvious thing to do is remove and reinstall the belt correctly but my question becomes, "how do I get the timing marks back where they need to be?" Do I move the crankshaft reversely, it says never to do that. However the manual says that in the event the crankshaft is moved reversly that it should then be backed off one turn or advanced two full turns. It would seem that this would be done with the belt OFF? OR do I advance boththe pump and camshaft forward the distance of one tooth and reinstall the belt?

Too bad there is not more

Too bad there is not more traffic here. It may help someone else to know that I refitted the belt by advancing the injection and cam pulleys by one tooth and it started on the first turn and idles perfectly now.

i was gona say

doubt you done any damage, my sportrak slipped a cog when i first got it and it skipped a couple of teeth, runs fine once it was sorted, but for a couple of days until we figured out what happend i struggled to get up hills.... glad you got it sorted

Timing

This is dead easy, remove the cover get the crankshaft lined up with its mark. Then remove the belt, you can then turn the pump to its mark on pulley to mark on the casing turn this slowly either way. Then with the camshaft turn either way,if it stops don't force.Turn the crank either way 1/2 turn this will allow camshaft to turn to its mark. Then return crank to its mark, then refit belt.Check that all marks line up pulleys to casing. If you have an original daihatsu belt it has yellow lines on the back of the belt which verifies the timing.Hope this helps Mick49
