over heating

Forum:

hi my sporty, has been stoud for 2 years till i rescued here!
the car when running over heated, after 20mins or so, checked the thermo and radiator, the thermo state was fine, the radiator was rusty in side so flushed it out, and noticed the top pipe was blocked, so replaced that,
today on the way to mot station, it started to over heat but after a 45 min run at 60mph, i wanted to give it a run to blow CRAP out as its been stoud,

i was wondering if its the head gaske, however there is no white cream goo, in the engine and oil is clean,

any advise???

I had similar problem with my

I had similar problem with my green one, when I got it it had been stood for 14 months - flushing the rad disnt work and I had to change it in the end

Ideas .........

1. Run the engine to temperature.
2. Remove coolant reservior cap.
3. Check for air bubbles rising in the reservoir.
4. Put you nose in to the reservoir opening and sniff .... does it smell exhaust fumes?

If 3 or 4 ..... head gasket is leaking or head gasket is cracked.

1. Water pump ..... belt could be turning but the blades could be stuck.
2. Hot engine look into the coolant reservior and rev high the engine. If the coolant 'rises' then the water pump is probably OK. If coolant remains 'unmoved' the water pump is dead. NB ... coolant might 'rise' but pump could be weak .... coolant should significantly 'rise'.

4. When you changed the thermostat, did you get the correct type ... Sporty is a 'long reach thermostat and not the traditional type used in cars.
5. Did you fit the thermostat with the toggle uppermost?

If 4 or 5 are incorrect then Sporty will overheat.

got a bigger, alu rad of a volvo, and fitted it sunday morning, and did over 60 miles last night 40 green lanes and no dramas at all, well ofter than fan belt slipping and draining thne battery but thats an offer issue, bigger better radiator, winner!!

4trak overheating

had my 4trak ten years (12 years old)

no overheating until 2 years ago, I believe problem is as follows-

used on-road, fan never locks up as radiator is big enough without fan assistance, and on-road large throttle openings coincide with sufficient air flow through rad.

However, off-road or towing, fan is required. I never go off-road but tow a caravan 2 or 3 times a year, but as the fan is not activated for several months at a time the mechanism eventually seized in the "free" position.

I fitted a Kenlowe fan (Kenlowe are on the internet) at a cost of

Peter Akers

I locked up my viscous fan,

I locked up my viscous fan, which resulted in:-
1. More noise
2. lower performance
3. worse fuel economy
4 engine working harder - so gets hot sooner!!
So...I am going to fit a leccy fan ASAP, as i have done on my offroad Sportrak

cheers
