Installing a Amateur Radio in a Daihatsu Sirion.

Forum:

Hi folks, want to install a amateur radio transceiver in the car.

My Smart Passion was wired up and served me well for eight years and we have taken the 12v lead out of that, it is four metres long and fused up in four places. Two normal fuse holders and two in line auto ones.

Now two questions, wire to the battery or to where on this car, is there a busbar for this sort of thing?

Anybody have experience either with amateur radio or even a CB for that matter?

Somebody said there might be a magic grommet in the bulkhead or is it a matter of boring a hole and grommeting it up?

Look forward to any replies.

Phil.

Radio Amateur

Never ever thought I would meet another Radio Amateur on this site! My callsign is G4CZS. Installed a 2 metre TX/RX in my Fourtrak many years ago and used the 12v cigaratte lighter socket. It will depend on how many amps you require, my TX/RX was only 10 watts output and needed 20 watts to run it so as Ohms law applies the current I needed was around 1.7 amps which the vehicle wiring for the cigar lighter could deliver. I made a simple fused 5amp lead and never had a problem. Not been active now for 10 years but thinking about acquirng another rig having just sold the Fourtrak and buying another late registration Fourtrak!

RE: Radio Amateur

Yep I am a G1 Rocky, ran AR in a Smart Passion for eight years no problem although I used a window mount made by Maldol now no longer available. My car has an alternative callsign as it's reg plate as the G1 one was so expensive. The o/p of the cig socket is 120w and I would not be running much more then 5w most of the time and 20w the rest.

Re: Radio Amateur

Having a 12v cable put in on Wednesday next week by my dealer hopefully. On the Sirion by the fuse box in the area adjacent to it, is a square aperture blocked with a piece of grey plastic, does anyone know what this is? It's not a way in by any chance?
