Narrower tyres on Fourtrak TDX

My lesser 1999 TDX 4Trak is needing new tyres. Present ones are 255-70s on those factory bling alloys, but I'd prefer a narrower section to get more steering feel,(my TDS is a more satisfying drive on 205s). How narrow can I safely go on those rims guys?

2 inch body lift,
2 inch suspension lift
sj steel rims
31x10.5 tyers
volvo radiator and expanstion tank
upgraded hoses!
vw polo 1.3 supercharged webber carb

Towing is rare these days.

Rarely exceed 50 mph on our twisty rural roads.

Off road as sometimes it's the shortest route when in Portugal. No serious off road work though.

Was hoping you would tell me the rim width. The alloys are factory jobs with 255 tyres that I'm told were always the size from new.

Quite happy with normal road tyres but I would like a smaller width for more feel.

I think of hand they were 6 inch wide, put some sportrack wheels and tyres on!
That will be the safest and easiest way 5 inch wide!

Besides, I want to be legal for once as I spend time in a foreign land where the law have little to do but pull vehicles.

Ok, may I ask the Q another way? - What size tyres does a Fieldman TDL have as standard? (They don't have extra wide plastic arches, therefore wont have 255s as standard?)

Original Fourtraks with steel rims were fitted with 215 / 15's.
Alloys were fitted with 235/75/15's or 255/70/15.

If you have alloys you can go down to the 235/75/15's; alternatively fit steel rims and use 215/15's.

BTW:- do Cherokee (5 stud) wheels fit a 4Trak? - Just been mentioned & I'd never heard if before, & there are some Jeep wheels & tyres close by........I bet they don't though????
