Stiff steering 1994 Fourtrak F73

Forum:

Grateful for help pls.

My steering has suddenly begun to go stiff when cornering at low speed. It feels as if something is sticking as the steering wheel is turned, trying to send me across the road so it has not been tried at speed!

The steering had developed a grinding and vibration on full lock both ways, and the noise then started happening all the time after the car had been stood. Fluid level is fine and i thought i had solved the problem by replacing the alternator /waterpump V-belt which was disintegrating, also changing the power steering V- belt which was thin and tightening the pump bolts which were loose.

The car has just passed its MoT. I had to adjust the front NS wheel bearing , involving much reliance on previous postings on this forum as I have no manual Previous posts). Without the huge locknut spanner I used a punch and hammer , backing off one flat. I had to guess at the torque. The only MoT advisory is slight play in the NSF lower ball joint
Any suggestions pls Unknw

Sounds like the power

Sounds like the power steering pump, when these start to go it is at low engine speeds. The pump cannot provide the pressure or flow to operate the steering correctly, at higher revs, it can.

It is usually the seals on the piston which begin to fail through wear, this allows a proportion of fluid to go past.
