fourtrak axle differences

Forum:

Hi all, i am new around here and have been recomended to post here by someone on difflock,
basically im looking to upgrade my suzuki samurai trayback to coilsprings and want to do it with daihatsu axles as they will be stronger than the stock 1.3 items, what i want to know is if the 1.6 fourtrak axles will be as strong as the 2.8 axles? as ive got an audi A4 1.9tdi motor in my suzuki so strength is a key issue!
many thanks
Adam

pretty much but

get old f70/75 axles because getting parts for the old f50 1.6 stuff is difficult, milner keep all spares for these on the shelf, but I don't know too much about the old 1.6 fourtrak some parts are interchangable.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

when i said 1.6 i didnt mean

when i said 1.6 i didnt mean that i don't think, i meant 2.0, i got the engine options confused with the sportrak and thought they did a 1.6 fourtrak, so can i re-phrase and ask if the 2.0 petrol axles will be as strong as the 2.8tdi axles? i also believe the petrol axles have much better diff ratio's for fitting bigger tyres, is this also correct?
cheers

yes

your about right

Lets clarify, the 1.6 is

Lets clarify, the 1.6 is either a Sportrak or an F20, not a Fourtrak.

Fourtrak axles will be stronger as they are designed to deal with more torque, so considerably more robust and reliable. These will also be higher geared to deal with the lower engine revs of a diesel unit and maintain a reasonable top speed.

Look for a breaker which is an earlier leaf sprung model as these have solid axles front and rear. You can convert them to coil spring units if you have the ability and facilities. Later independent models only had a solid axle on the rear.

If you have a breaker you can also use the steering gear which means everything is greasable, and you can set it up much easier.

Hi, yes sorry i new it was a petrol fourtrak my mates selling and got confused with the sportrak and thought it was a 1.6,
so what i want to know is am i better off getting a pair of 2.8 axles for

The petrol engined vehicles

The petrol engined vehicles of any make have a lower axle ratio because a petrol revs higher than a diesel, but produces less torque. The diesel Fourtrak items will be much stronger, but have a higher ratio to compensate for the lower revving units, but cope better with larger wheels due to their additional strengtIf you fit the petrol units you will find the vehicle is much too slow as they will be geared far too low, but larger wheels and tyres will compensate.

Personally, i would fit 2.8 Fourtrak axles for the additional strength to deal with your diesel motors torque.

Axle ratios

Hi
The axles on the petrol and diesel fourtraks are the same but the diff ratios (ring and pinion) are different. Diesels are 3.3:1 and petrols are 3.9:1 so around a 20% reduction with the petrol axles. F50 has a similar ratio to the diesel fourtrak but if you can find an F20 the diffs are 4.7:1 however the half shafts have a different number of splines to the fourtrak so the ring and pinion will need swapping to the fourtrak carrier.
Best regards
Dave.

The axles are Toyota, but

The axles are Toyota, but little in the way of lockers available cheaply in the UK. Most will be custom made, and expensive; if you look in the states you will find many rebuild them and sell kits of parts which can include lockers.
