Looked at YRV Turbo today..............

Forum:

Went to look at a 54 plate yellow YRV turbo today, 45k miles, 2 owners, full main dealer history, for sale at the original supplying main dealer. Sounds perfect, until you see it, and the price...........

Walk away from it, it sounds

Walk away from it, it sounds a rough one and well overpriced!

Dont rush into buying, plenty pop up on ebay, Autotrader, Pistonheads etc, some better cars at alot less price too.

Hi mate, like dave and jon said best to view a few if you can, dont jump for the first one you see,,they are out there just not many,,got mine from a main main dealer in crewe 1 owner full history and lucky enough it was mint paid

The yellow plastic does fade......

Hi There, I currently own a yellow Turbo, and thescoop, rear spoiler and the tops of the side mirror covers have all started to go a very light yellow due to the paint and the sun. Apart from the cosmetics what was the rest of the car like? The only issue with the turbo is that it is a very rare car to find, even though what Dave says there are a fair few appearing on the internet, there were only 210 officially imported into the U.K by Daihatsu, and some of these have been written off. Even Daihatsu Dave has a crashed example he is selling parts off Wink
Looking at the years this model was available, 2003-end of 2004, then unfortuntaley you may struggle to find a good example. I had trouble with mine after I bought it, one of the biggest ones which I couldn't spot was that it had a horrible water leak, and found this out to my peril after a very hard downpour happened and found 1" of water in both the passenger and drivers wells one morning. Fixed this and that was that. If you are serious about the car then the mechanicals are the bits you need to look at, especially pay attaention to the condition of the Auto-box, worth having a look at the auto oil level on the dipstick as well the condition of the oil in the engine. On that note the Turbo also has a 6 months/6,000 miles service interval, so make sure the service book reflects this.
If you are still seriuos abou the car, use the things you have found as part of the barganing to get the price down. I bought my Turbo nearly 3 years ago at that price, but it only had 23,000 miles on the clock (Now 37,000). Does the car have the TURBO130 stickers on it?

Just had a look on Auto-trade and there is a yellow one (Described as showroom condition) with 51,000 miles on the clock for

Cheers guys

thanks for your replies. The one thing that's attracting me is the main dealer history (probably rare for a car this age) and the fact a warranty will be included (a bit of peace of mind - in case the autobox dies.........)

Dave, I think you're right about walking away; but I might nip over for a test drive anyway and to check out the service history. One day one will turn up!

Jpor, no turbo stickers on sides, I assume this was an option, or both doors have been caved in a some point lol.

Cheers

Worth another look, as with

Worth another look, as with the turbo stickers not everyone has these, as some owners thought they were too tacky and had them removed by the dealership (They came as standard). These cars are very good for the money but be prepared for the wooly handling at speed around cornsers (Ended up modifying mine to cope with this, lowered, strubrace etc..)
My car has a lot of war damage, especially on the front, due to the high front on the car they pick-up stone damage very easily. Worth making sure the steershift function works as well, oh and if it has had a new exhaust make sure if you can the car can freely fev at speed, as if it's like any other aftermarket exhaust it may have overboost issues (Hitting a brick wall effect). Rather say it like it is.. Wink

There is another yellow on the trader without stickers going for

Test Driven

Just got back from the test drive. He handed me the keys and said be back by 17:00 please!! Result. Checked all fluids from cold - all ok. Tranny fluid nice and red. Been serviced every 6k at main dealer apart from last two which were 10k apart. Engine sounds sweet enough - but - it was reluctant to start. Took 3 attempts but once fired up it was fine. It's been sat around for over a week and although there was little fuel in it it should have still started on the button imo. Anyway, took it for a good test run, checked everything!! Gearchanges very smooth and no strange noises noted. After letting it warm up I opened it right up in Auto. As it came on boost I was very surprised with the amount of pull it has. Played with the steershift, which works fine and drove it for 10 miles or more. It felt so much more composed and solid than my YRV premium, it felt like a completely different car. So, needless to say I am impressed with the drive, and yes, I want one. Thing is the condition is not what I'd hoped for, especially compared with mine, and the price is too high. Will see what the salesman comes up with, who is really sound to be honest - no pressure (even said I could keep it overnight to show the wife). Garage has a good reputation around here so would be nice to do business with them. Sorry for the long post!! Watch this space I guess.

Yeah, something you have to

Yeah, something you have to be aware of of on the steershift, it ain't is good as a paddle shifter in say an Astin martin Wink Basically happens to me when the car is at a high rev range and you say want to downshift from 3rd to 2nd, the computer makes the decision that you are going too quick for 2nd and therefore the beep Smile

Sounds as though you had your test drive then? Impressions?

Just noticed your report, but

Just noticed your report, but showed at the bottom on my browser Sad Up-to you but there are good and bad turbos. If the mechanics are sound but the trim is a little tatty then I would go for it and spend some money on the trim. Would be good for bargaining against though...don't ask don't get.. Wink Try and get a Service in for the price.. Smile How did you find the handling? One gripe I had after a while id thebouncy back end on the uprated springs Daihatsu fitted. Also worth checking the rear anti-roll bar as they are known for snapping and were replaced under warranty. Unfortunately I must still have the original on mine, but still good Smile

Sorry jpor, yes, the handling. Seemed ok to me, although it is bound to be an improvement on my premium anyhow. Could of done with taking it on a few more lanes, but I had my "what can find wrong with it" hat on at the time. Salesman said I can take it home for the night if I want to. Yes it is in Preston. Yeah

Yes it is in Preston. Yeah the exhaust.........it does stick out more than the left side, its had new tailpipes and even after looking under it, I cant fathom out why one sticks out more than the other. Looks rubbish to be honest, and I couldn't put up with it if car becomes mine! One thing I noticed, and failed to mention in my earlier post, when it changes from 2nd to 3rd at high revs there is a slight "lurch" but the gearchange is still smooth if that makes sense. What do you think? All gearchanges are hardly noticeable to be honest, just I noticed a slight lurch from 2nd to 3rd at high revs. Noticed its probably had a new lamda sensor, as the wiring sheathing is florescent green and is blatently new. Cheers!

Another Northwest member possibly?

The gearbox can be a little jerky at times, something a lot of reviewers have pointed out, but most of the time I use the 'Steershift' function. The exhaust sounds to be either a dealer replacement fit or someone has gone and got a quick exhaust made and fitted. A new lambda sensor maybe somehting done due to the new exhaust, never had a new one when I had my Blitz Nur-spec fitted, but it was marketed to fit the 4-wheel drive version of the YRV Turbo.

Looking at the location you could potentially be a 4th member of the Northwest YRV Turbo club Wink

I have bought one

Had a call from the same dealer that has the original yellow one I looked at (see original post) and they accepted our ridiculous offer!! BUT, they have ANOTHER yellow turbo in stock that has just been traded in. I had a look at it inside the showroom and it really is a beauty. The wheels have a little corrosion as normal and there's a small mark by the filler cap even the plastics are only very slightly faded. Inside is immaculate too. Had a look in the service book and has full main dealer history, 2 new front tyres and by the looks of them, new front pads too. Here's the best bit! Turned on ignition to check miles.....................22k on the clock. Had a lady owner from new then last owner for 3 years was a 91 year old gentleman who decided the suspension was too hard for his back apparently. It barely covered a thousand miles last year. Has years MOT, just been serviced and taxed till end of year. Seems to drive perfect, gave it a right going over. Only bad points I have noticed so far is that the exhaust pipe (coming out of the back box) knocks against the underneath at times, looks like bracket just wants bending. Also the A/c runs, but hisses and seems to be out of gas; (I'm a refrigeration engineer so HOPEFULLY won't be a problem!! So, I'm well pleased. Pick it up tomorrow all being well. Look forward to meeting up with some of you guys soon!

Looking forward to the ownership, not sure funds allow modds............yet. Wouldn't mind a boost gauge at some point, then lowering springs...............................;-)

---------------------------------------------------
2004 Yellow YRV Turbo

Lowering springs maybe hard to find...

Depending on what you want as lowering springs for the car. I found it a challenege to get any for the Turbo. In the end I was lucky enough to get some Teins to lower the car by 30mm front and 35 mm back. The only gripe I had with my car was the handling, and therefore the essential mods I found to make it go round corners better were the following:

- Lowered Springs
- Front Stutbrace
- Different alloys with wider tyres

You could possibly try wider tyres first (Daihatsu Dave has done this in the past on the standard alloys, and put on 195/55/15 tyres).

The problem with different alloys is the fact the rear beam can get in the way. One way i have had to resolve this is by fitting 5MM wheel spacers on each side, but then that caused an issue with arch rubbing with the tyres, especially having lowering springs fitted.

Thanks for the heads up

Thanks for the information, I didn't think that aftermarket parts would be readily available somehow! The car drives faultlessly and I'm very pleased with it - at the moment lol!! I have noticed that in 2nd gear in steershift, its sounds like it is changing gear when gently accelerating at approx 3000 rpm. It clearly isnt changing gear as it stays in 2nd and you can change up to 3rd no problem. This isn't noticeable in full auto. Maybe im being paranoid. Have you ever noticed this? Also when putting it into steershift, the revs rise slightly rather like when sports mode is activated on a conventional auto.

Wayne

---------------------------------------------------

Like 2nd gear and the engine has a second wind?

If you are talking about hitting the limit and then deciding to give you more juice afterwards? Then the answer is yes, it's to do with the Auto Gearbox ECU hitting the point when you are in full auto that it needs to change, but as you are in steershift mode it will pass this point and max the revs of the engine before you decide to make the change. Oh and it is alleged that 80MPH in 2nd is possible Wink So nothing to worry about, as long as you make sure you have enough gearbox oil Smile There was talk of this on another thread, and for the life of me I can't remember the poster (Possibly Wifes Yellow YRV?) commenting that when you use steershift the DVVT function of the engine changes or something like that....
So when are you posting up some piccies of your pride and joy then?

Yes thats the DVVT!

In auto mode it doesn't actuate unless you are in flatout kickdown, but in steershift it will... read down this thread, there is some more info here... http://www.daihatsu-drivers.co.uk/node/13082
