Please please help!!!! It looks as though my ignition barrel has had it. I've managed to remove the barrel and steering lock away from the steering column and I have found that I am able to turn the ignition with a screwdriver. If Ileave the key in the barrel manualy turn ignition my car won't start! I have a fourtrak F78 1998. I also live in Spain so getting parts is a nightmare. Any suggestions please
Jumped the gun?
Before you removed the ignition did you isolate the fault to the ignition or was that just a guess?
1. Did the vehicle 'turn over' or 'click' or was it completely 'dead'?
2. What made you think it was an ignition barrel/key problem?
3. Did you check the battery supply?
4. Did you check power was being supplied to the ignition?
5. Did you remove/test the starter motor?
6. Did you check the vehicle's earth connections [especially the battery to earth lead since it could be corroded and all power circuits will therefore be dead. Also the engine's earth strap - engine block to chasis - for conductivity?
Now you have dismantled the ignition switch you might have doubled your problem - would not 'start' and now plus a diy broken ignition switch!
