YRV Turbo. Found some oil in intercooler pipe........

Forum:

Sounds bad..........but hasn't used a drop of oil nor does it, as far as i know, smoke. Anyone else ever looked in their pipes? Car's only done 23k so hopefully the turbo isn't dying yet Biggrin

You will never find a turbo

You will never find a turbo engine without oil in the air intake system. Its fine. If the turbo bearings are going and oil is leaking more than it should, you will see the car blue smoking.

Small amounts is normal...its

Small amounts is normal...its from a build up of small particles sucked along from the head breather.

Your not modifying the car then?

Just standard maintenance, or were you thinking about putting a bigger intercooler on? Smile

I'd go with the better experienced on here, especially Daihatsu Dave, as he knows his stuff Wink

Just tinkering!

Had the cover off yesterday whilst fitting boost gauge so ended up having a root around, checking/tightening etc etc!!

No, no plans for a bigger intercooler, although I dare say it would benefit from one as it seems to get rather warm at lower speeds. I need a new air filter, could you recommend anywhere? Have had a scout around on here and a couple of suppliers popped up.

Your scangauge. Does it simply plug into the OBDII plug?

When you say your after a new air filter, do you mean new filter for the box or new mushroom/cone type? On the Blitz stainless I think it is sapping in too much hot air, as the Scangauge is showing high IA temps compared to the outside Sad

The Scangauge II is simply plug and play, straight into the OBDII port and everything is taken care of. You can even change the backlight colour. Have red on the YRV and Green on the Scooby, to match the dash lights. The system also can tell you the average MPG you are doing as well as how much fuel you have used. Not really made the most of this device except to use the gauge feature (Have MPG, Water Temp, Inlet Air Temp and Battery Volts showing up, can cycle through others as well). The sytem can also diagnose any Engine management issues, and if you need to reset teh ECU code once you have sorted an issue (Luckily not had to do this). A very good gadegt to have and as stated in an other thread has pin-pointed issues that have saved me breaking down Smile

I need a scangauge in my life!

Sounds very impressive indeed. Maybe I'll source one when funds permit.

On the air filter front, I was referring to a new filter for the air box, although a cone type filter would be nice but I was concerned about it sucking in all that heat. Are you aware of anywhere that supplies the standard filters?

Cheers Dave, I will have a scout round for an ADL stockist, genuine diahatsu too - result! Yes I did see the fibre pad on it which is quite mucky, quite a strange idea. Will rip it off tomorrow, got to help the breathing until I get a new filter. Thanks Dave Smile

Hi Dave,I take it you haven't come across any aftermarket box filters on your travels like a K&N for example? Thinking of putting my air-box back on but would like a free-flow filter if possible... Smile

Dave you're right........again

Pulled all breathers and the intercooler off today and gave everything a right going over. The oil is getting sucked through the breather pipe that pushes onto the rocker cover. The air intake pipe from the airbox upto this breather pipe is oil free, then afterwards most pipework and the cooler have a film of oil in them. Also removed the plugs on the two gearbox sensors and checked for dampness/security etc - all ok. Made the mistake of removing the o/s front foglamp to removed the condensation from it. One of the screws holding the backplate on sheared off and the other I managed to remove from the nasty monkey metal housing that calls itself a lamp. Got rid of condensation and siliconed up everything...............Probably need a new lamp I think.

Has anyone tried making their dumpvalve dump to atmosphere to see what it sounds like? The main air intake pipe would need blanking off; not sure if anything else would need modifying. Can't afford a blitz yet.............;-)
