Cam followers on F73 engine

Forum:

Due to the mot man busting a piston ring on my F73 turbo diesel, I am taking it apart 120,000 miles before I need to. (done 80,000 miles)

Setting aside the annoyance caused by such a brutal test and the Government's attitude of 'tough shit, it's f***ed, not our problem mate', I note the excellent condition of valves, pistons and liners ( honing marks still visible at the TOP of the bores ).

The only thing I note is that the cam followers for the inlet valves are severely damaged with many chunks out of the case-hardening. The exhaust valve cam followers are as new.

Any thoughts as to why anybody?

Don't forget the inlet follow

Don't forget the inlet followers are subject to lower temps. than the exhaust side so it maybe something to do with the hardening process at manufacture.

This is a ridiculous test, and many a good engine has gone bang following this "procedure"....Basically, it's because it produces more emisions the faster it runs, but who runs at the redline all day everyday? For future reference, fit a makeshift rev limiter by adjusting the pedal/cable travel (by an adjustable bolt in the floorpan) as many owners of classic/elderly diesels do to stop these imbeciles overevving it.
