Forum:
i fix my push rods recenlty and for a while car started brilliant
but last week its struggled to start in mournings just as if glowplugs are gone.
bit weird how one minute there fine next it strugles to start.
which makes me think is there a relay or something else that might have gone, i have always heard a lot of clicking form under the bonnet on both fourtraks ive owned.
am i reading to much into it?
Clicking sound
Hi Werty..cant throw any light on the starting problem..but I too am on my second 4trak, and have also wondered what that clicking noise is coming from under the bonnet when i turn the key to the on position before firing her up..so i wouldnt worry too much about that..but does anyone know what it is
Also, while i,m asking..what about the green light which sits just to the left of the steering column ??
Clonk!
The clicking sound (more like a clonk) near to battery (drivers side) is the glow plug solenoid (relay). The ECU switches it on and off until the coolant reaches a certain temperature.
Not sure about green light? Rear fog lamp warning light?
The workshop manual describes the test sequence for glow plugs.
My workshop manual describes two types of glow plug control - fixed delay and variable delay.
In the variable type, the ECU measures the current to three of the glow plugs (not all four), so if one goes down it screws up the glow plug control.

Cheers for that !
Cheers for that svoburner ! Have always wondered what the heck it was !
The glow plugs are one of two
The glow plugs are one of two types, either the 7 volt, or 7.5 volt systems, so begin by measiring the voltage at the power rail. If there is power there than it is most likely duff plugs or a dodgy relay.
The best thing is to remove them and reconnect them to the power rail, then put an earth lead to each body. Turn on the ignition and watch them glow individually, this will show a duff plug.
If they all glow, and the engine starts normally from hot, which it will without glow plugs, then look at the relay.
Check the obvious, are the power feeds ok, is the relay earthed correctly, a common problem, and check the feedback circuit wiring. Circuits with feedback wiring only switch the plugs on at lower times if the engine is hot or warm as they do not need as much, or any heat to start.
Once you have ascertained a
Once you have ascertained a glow plug fault, or not; i would check the valve clearances as these often move after work. If they are incorrect they may be held slightly open and will continue to move until they settle.
