Forum:
hi im new to the forum i have just bought a fourtrak and after getting it home and checking it over properly i noticed that the water was filthy. left it and drove it for a couple of weeks. when i drive and 60 or just doodle around the temp gauge is fine but when i get up to 70 it gets hot so you slow down and the gauge goes back down. whilst green laning it gets hot also. finely got some time this evening so took the rad off and flushed it out the water was proper black but whatever was in it was mixed wuth the water so im not sure if its oil in the water or not. both the alternater and power steering belts were in bad condition so im going to replace them and the timing belt for piece of mind. do you think i should change the head gasket while ive got it stripped down or leave it and see how it goes. thanks for your help
Clean the cooling system
Clean the cooling system properly, look in the "How It Works" section as i have written an in epth article on cooling systems.
There is no need to replace the head gasket unless there is a problem with it.
Cleaning the cooling system properly is time consuming, but once done properly it takes very little to keep it clean. The cooling problem is the dirt and debris moving around the system, it stops the water from doing its job properly.
