Forum:
Hi. I recently became the new owner of a 1990 Sportrak EL. It had sat in my mate's garage for 14 years while he was overseas. It's in good condition with hardly any rust but has a problem with the carb which is driving me mad. It's difficult to start and when it's warm it cuts out when I stop at a road junction. I think the automatic choke is seized. I understand that these are operated by a wax capsule. Has anyone had any success in fixing them or fitting a manual choke?
Thanks
John

It is more likely that the fuel has evaporated over such a period of time and the various internal components have dried and deteriorated.
This will cause numerous problems with the operation of the carb, so this leaves two options. Option one is to get an overhaul kit and rebuild it, or have a specialist carb reconditioner do it for you. Option two is to replace it with another aftermarket carb.
The original carbs are so good thet i would choose to have a specialist recondition it for you. This is for two reasons, they have the solvents to remove the solid residue which builds up from a dried out carb. They have the measuring equipment to set the carb up properly on the vehicle at all stages of throttle, or operation.
If you rebuild it yourself you still have to pay for professional cleaning of the components, and for setting up on the vehicle.
It would be prudent to remove and strip the lift pump, if this has also dried out the valves become defective. This may be what is limiting the fuel delivery to the carb. Both carburettor and lift pumps are designed to remain "wet" from being immersed in fuel at all times.

Hi
Thanks for the response. That gives me a few options.
I did try a carb specialist for an aftermarket webber but it was about
